Please can you folks have a squizz at this census and tell me what you think his relation to the family is? I'm stumped!
Something of wife? stepchild?
RG9/1346/61/24
Thanks in advance

Tina,
Haven't had a long look at it but the second part seems to me to be "grandson of wife" (presumably Mrs. Legge looking at the age difference). I'll look at bit harder and if anything strikes me I'd be dead pleased to help YOU for a change.

Tina,
look number two has made me change my mind. NOW I think it reads (after the first four letters) "Mary son of wife". The first four letters might be some sort of shorthand or cryptic way of saying natural/illegitimate/baseborn/bastard/out of wedlock/former name/estranged...there are all sorts of possibilities
It might therefore be worth looking for her as Mary Cox in the previous census do you think?

Tina,
Haven't a clue
Almost looks like daughter.
Definitely something belonging to wife - I also suspect it is probably a reference to an illegitimate birth.
There appears to be a possible marriage of William Legg to Mary Cox in Jun 1849 in Wareham, Dorset, which would be in keeping with this.
If you go back a page on the 1861 census, there are some Cox's on the prwvious page. Not sure if that helps or hinders

Member 7652 Looking for ROSE, BRENNAN, EDEN, GREEN, FAIRCLOUGH, CUNLIFFE, BARKER, SPEAKMAN, HARRISON, BROMILOW, FINNEY, MYERS, FAIRHURST, BIRCHALL, CRANK, LITTLER, NAYLOR Mainly ASHTON IN MAKERFIELD, PRESCOT/PARR, ORMSKIRK
Wonder if this is them in 1851?
HO107; Piece: 1856; Folio: 597; Page: 22;
Thomas is listed as Legg, but there is a daughter Jane of the right age.
If so, clearly a second marriage for William.
Let me know what you think.
Chris

Hi Tina
Not sure what it says but thought you might find this site interesting
www.opcdorset.com
It's the Dorset on line parish clerk site and it has stuff for Wool on it. Someone is presently transcribing the 1851 and 1861 census entries.
