Hello
Would anybody have any information to share about my gg grandparents. I have Edward/Edmond (it changes on various certificates) Ryan on the 1861 census married to Mary nee Fleming. They live in Cazneau St in Liverpool and both state that they were born in Ireland. However their daughter Ellen was born in Birkenhead in 1858 at 105A Albion Street. This is my earliest sightings of the family, but in 1871 Mary Ryan gives her birthplace as Tipperary, the closest I can get to finding anything more about them. If anybody has any expertise in finding Irish ancestors I would love to hear from you.
Thanks in hope
Paul

The dates you are looking at are before civil registration began in Ireland and Parish Registers are often the only records available, except maybe the Griffiths Valuation, you might take a look at these sites for that
http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php

Apart from that, although I would normally hesitate to recommend other forums, when it comes to Ireland there are others who are more knowledgeable than we are and I could suggest you check out the board for Ireland at www.rootschat.com and I have also found the Mailing Lists on Rootsweb have some very knowledgeable people subscribing and willing to assist. You can subscribe to the Munster mailing list here http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/inde ... NSTER.html

Irish Roots!
Hello Ski1,
You should have a look at the Irish Family History Foundation (family history research services in Ireland) site:
http://www.irish-roots.ie/about-ifhf.asp
If you page down to County Centres you will see Tipperary is in two parts, North and South. This is a hangover from the 'colonial' days when it was North Riding and South Riding. You can search for free but viewing the actual records is a little on the expensive side.
Ryan is a fairly common name down there, so good luck.
Cheers,
Dickiesam

Thanks for your suggestions. You are right to suggest that Ryan is a common name in Tipperary! My problem is that even if I find an Edmond Ryan in the Griffiths Valuation (and there are several), how do I know which is the one I am looking for? I have also been on the Brian Boru 'pay as you search' site for Irish ancestors, and found 3 Mary Fleming ( a much less common name) marriages in Tipperary but none of them to a Ryan! It's very frustrating tracing Irish ancestors!!
