Australian advice needed.
Australian advice needed.
Good morning....evening? I'm asking for advice from our treasures down under - but not going back too far! My Grandad's brother packed up and went off to Oz sometime in the 1960's........or so I'm told. Nobody had any contact with him afterwards. Does anyone know who I can contact to try and find out where he went and where his family is now? William James Lindsay was married to Marian and had two sons. Not sure if both sons went with him. I'd love to know if there's folk in Australia, related to me, seeking their ancestors too! Thanks for any input. Pauline x

Paste this address into your favoured search engine. It should take you to the "Search Records" area at the National Archives of Australia in Canberra. I had a look searching firstly under Lindsay and then under his given names and had seven hits. There are one or two that match your enquiry around about the correct time (ie. 1959 - 1960 odd). Depending on the status of the document you can for a small fee get a copy of the document downloaded to you over the web.
Please let me know how you get on and whether I can help you any further.

Emigrants to Australia
Hello Pauline,
Having nearly emigrated to Australia with my family back in 1961 [family ties held us back], I assume your relative was among the £10 Poms, those families who took advantage of the £10-a-head Assisted Immigration scheme for the chance of a new life down-under for a tenner.
If he was, it is almost certain that the Australian High Commission, Australia House, Strand, London WC2B 4LA, will have records. You should be able to find the date of departure, the ship, and ports of call in Australia.
Good luck,
Dickiesam

Morning Dickiesam, I've just been to the site Philrob gave me and can expect a reply within 30 days.....maybe your suggestion will be a quicker route! For some reason my dad says they'd have flown - come on, they weren't minted! I had a school friend who went and they definitely did the "£10 pom" on the boat job! I was nine/ten years old at the time so.....1965-66. Shall get on to it later. Many thanks.

Good morning all, Yes....I took Dickiesam's advice and called the Australian High Commission - the lady gave me details of where I'd find info on their website. Guess what?.......it's the place Philrob told me to go! Well, I make life difficult for myself as there are a stack of Lindsay's that would fit! Shall have to speak to Auntie and see if she can remember any more details for me. Great stuff!

Hi Susan, Unfortunately we have absolutely nothing to go on as regards where the Lindsays made their home in Australia BUT.....I now suspect William left England much later than at first thought as his son had already emigrated. This afternoon I've discovered William James Lindsay married Marian Isabel McCrone in Dumfries on July 27th 1928. Whoopee, a start! This evening I'm going to hunt down any sons born in Scotland. It will be difficult as the certificates aren't online for dates I'm searching. I'll have to request copies. Auntie and I suspect William's wife died and he then packed up and joined his son down under. On the Australian Archives site I've got a few suspects lined up! It'll take time - but I'll get there! Regards to all, Pauline.

Hi John,
Aha! That looks good to me - though his date of birth was 28th Dec 1899! I reckon William's son went to Australia in the early sixties so possibly travelled on a ship......am I right in thinking west coast was the destination in those days? Must admit to being flummoxed at the amount of William Lindsay's I came across on the Australian Archives site
I really need to find out the son's name and possible marriage before hitting the Oz newspapers with pleas to find any surviving rellies. Your info certainly gives me something to work on. Maybe if some kind soul is strolling around that cemetery (as you do!!!!) they could take a peek for any more tidbits. Many thanks. Pauline.

Good Morning Crew. Please excuse me if I babble - but I am beside myself with excitement! There's a lovely lady up in Scotland who has helped me out over the past year or so with hunts on the north of the border rellies. Well, yesterday she went to Edinburgh and did a search for children of William Lindsay (grandad's brother) Whoopee!..........one son born 1933 who I'd picked out from info given on the forum as a nominee.............William Newton Lindsay and his wife, Martha, along with children Steven (born 18/03/60) and Melanie (born 22/08/62) sailed on the Castel Felice on 22/05/70. So I now have names of the rellies I'm trying to find. VERY excited! Now I need to find Castel Felice's destination and, if possible, destinations for her passengers. Oh gosh, that's today's gardening plans gone to pot! Anybody down under know a "Steven Lindsay"?????
