GEORGE SELBY landlord at 6 Elliot Street in 1871.
GEORGE SELBY landlord at 6 Elliot Street in 1871.
He is my 3x great grandfather and is shown as a licenced victualler at this address. A report from the Liverpool Mercury in March 1871 refers to a mad dog being destroyed near Mr Selby's public house and the shop of Mr Houghton, chemist. If anyone knows anything about this pub, such as its name, I'd love to hear from them. Ten years earlier he was a boarding house keeper at 118 Dale Street and he ended his days in the Toxteth park Workhouse in 1893.
Welcome aboard mu.jo
1874 Directory doesn't give a name for the pub just lists George Selby victualler (corner Market St)
1894 Directory states
Commercial Wine & Spirit Vaults
John Kermode.
Sorry not to have been of help.

Thanks for those Jan, I was interested in the photographs since they mention John Pride Hairdressers, where I believe my grandfather learned his trade.

Villiers Pub
Thanks to all those who have looked up information regarding Elliot Street and the pub my 4x great grandfather ran back in the 1870s. It was great to see the photographs, what a shame it's not still there along with the other lovely buildings. I must have passed it many times as a child but had no idea then that it was connected to my family. Many thanks agin to everyone, mu.jo
