1901 Census - Thomas Reynolds

Post by 42aitch »

Hi

I have tried to find Thomas Reynolds B c1872 and his wife Ellen b1873 and a probable son Francis in the Garston area in 1901. Thomas and Francis died in WW1 and their address was 18 Banks Road, Garston. Ellen and Thomas married at St Austin's Grassendale in 1893 and I would love to know did they have any other children before Thomas died. I have found the WW1 record for them on GWC and Thomas is buried in Allerton Cemetery Section X1V RC 219. He died on service whilst at home of Pneumonia on 5.12.1918 and Francis was killed in action on 23.8.1915 in Gallipoli.

Can any of the experts on here find them, I have tried different spellings etc. but no luck.

Hi Eileen
This will get you into Banks Rd in 1901 if you want to go for a "stroll"
James Ockleshaw bn Garston
RG13/3507/118/1
(the Coffey's next door are my friends family)
Couldn't see Thomas in Garston in 1911 Directory sorry.

Tina
(perhaps they were hiding in the walled garden in Reynolds Park  )

Eileen
Doesn't help with your search but it seems to me that John Reynolds married Catherine Holagan Dec. 1871. and had Thomas (1872/3); Margaret (1877/8).
John died (aged 27) June 1879.
Catherine married William Hill Sep. 1880, and are at 23 Chapel Rd. Garston in 1881:- (ie step-son / daughter)
RG11; 3719; 134; p18.

Hi Jim

I also found those and have made a note of them as I think they are the same family, but as you say it doesn't help to find them in 1901. I have even tried putting Ellen's maiden name of Croft and can't find her there.

I have found her brothers and sisters in Garston area but no trace anywhere of Thomas, Ellen or Francis Reynolds.

As Tina has said they could be hiding in Reynolds Park :)

I will have to try Allerton Cemetery to see if there is a gravestone with an inscription.

Thanks for trying.

Thomas would have been 28ish in 1901. Could be that he had, already, enlisted and the whole family are in "married pads" somewhere ?
I'll keep looking anyway.

1901
Whitley street has two of the Croft brothers living there, Joseph & James, bros of Ellen also Margaret Pilling nee Reynolds.
You would think Thos & Ellen would be nearby!!
Margt does have Reynolds next door but these folks came from Ireland.
I've looked for Thos & Ellen as Hill just on the off chance.

Added
1911 Directory Mrs Alice Croft 18 Banks Rd.

Eileen / Tina
Do you think there's been a MAJOR ommission by the enumerators ?
It seems very strange that the Crofts were at 18 Banks Rd. (1891 & 1911) yet 18 & 20 are listed together in 1901 with the Ockleshaws and two "boarders" !!! with NO mention of the Crofts.

Hi Jim/Tina

It does look as though they have missed them out on the 1901, as 18 Banks Road in 1891 and 1911 (as found by Tina) Ellen's parents William and Alice were living there and on the WW1 records for Francis and Thomas the address is also 18 Banks Road which takes them to 1918.

I wonder if they were stationed somewhere else and Ellen's parents are visiting them there? Although I haven't found them on the 1901 either.

Looks as if it is another wait for 1911 Census :( :(

Thanks for your input, it helps to get another persons views and I have found that you always provide extra information.

Hi Eileen
I think Ellen's Dad Wm Croft may have died before 1901.
Free BMD death W Dby march qtr 1896 aged 56yrs, bn 1840c
1891 he was born 1839c.

As for the rest
Having a week in a caravan in Rhyl ??

Added later, the Reynolds family I mentioned in Whitley St, 1911 Directory has Patrick at 32 Banks Rd, just around the corner.
He has a son Francis aged 7 in 1901.
Could he be the young lad who died in Gallipoli??
Tks Eileen, it's the only birth too in BMD.

Guess wot? 1938 Directory
Mrs Ellen Reynolds, 18 Banks Rd.
Mrs Ockleshaw next door and my friends spinster Aunt Coffey next door to her. This is what's bugging me about Thos & Ellen. No one moved out of Garston, my Ed did, he emigrated with me to Wavertree

Tina

off topic Whitley St was off Raglan St, my Ed born at No. 68.
I'm emailing the Oracle, cuz Tommy.

Hi Tina,

There is only one Mrs Ellen Reynolds in the 1914 Directory she was living at 111 Ritson Street Liverpool 8.

There are a few Thomas Reynolds listed, but do we know his occupation?

None in the Garston area and others around Liverpool and Birkenhead.

Hi Tina & Jan & Jim

Tina you are like a dog with a bone, won't let anything go

Thanks for the death of William, that will be him he was born 7th March 1839 (My Birthday - No, not that year though :) Thanks also for the 1938 for Ellen Reynolds still at 18 Banks Road.

I don't think that the Francis you found is our Francis as the address was 18 Banks Road on the war records.

Did they have caravans in 1901!!!!!

Thanks again for all your help

They most certainly did Eileen.

Here's a photo taken at Seaview Luxury Holiday Resort in Rhyl.
This caravan would have been 3 half star, plenty of shade, secure, pneumatic tyres for added comfort.

and here's the family, Ellen looking lovely in white, Thomas just behind her, fearless Mum Alice is having a dip.
