Hi Colette
I had a good look through School Lane in 1851 but couldn't find anything.
I accidently stumbled across Thomas Street which I didn't realise was so close by and found the following:-

Page 49 of 81 St. George - ln (LN)
10CT 2H Thomas St.
William Devitt 32 Labourer - Ireland
wife Bridget 30 also Ireland

Page 52 of 81 St. George St. - ln
53 Thomas St.
Jane (?) Devitt 50 - mother-in-law (I couldn't read her occupation) - Ireland
Head of House was illegible - possibly William Ward
Ellenor his wife (ní Devitt) 24 - Ireland

Now if Mary Devitt resided in Thomas St. prior to her marriage, there is a good chance that William Devitt is her brother or that Jane (?) Devitt is her mother and Ellenor her sister. Or possibly both of these.
None of these people seem to appear on an ordinary search on Ancestry. I may just be over tired. Have you seen the time  .
Goodnight
Tony

additional information posted 12/01/2008
I bought the marriage cert. of William Ward to Ellen Devitt 07/05/1846.
Ellen's father is Charles Devitt, Shoe maker. They are living in Seel Street.
This only goes to prove that Ellen is not Mary's sister - but she may be a cousin.

I found this on the 1841 census
There is a posssibility for her family (without her) - Redmond Place (nr. Circus St. which was off Byrom St.). Her father is James, 35 b. Ireland (and as on Mary's marriage cert. he is also a Mason), Wife Marjory 32, their children Charles 10, Ellen 8, John 2, James 4mo.(all Liverpool born).
I need to find Mary Devitt by herself in 1841 aged about 15 -17 - possibly In Service somewhere.
Having a child Charles gives a possibility that James Devitt may be the brother of Charles Devitt, father of Ellen.

1851 William Ward

Post by Tina »

I hope you had a good kip Tony.
It is William Ward 33 cooper b Ireland, mother in law listed as Jane DEVILT 50 house keeper, her son Charles DEVILT 20 cooper, Ellenor Ward as ELLAND...cousin John Chaquie could be Maguire, anyone's guess!

Marr Wm Ward to ELLEN Devitt june q 1846 Lpl Free BMD.

1861 not sure about this...like Chas occupation
6 Llewellyn St Tockie Park, Jane Devitt 67 wid, Charles Devitt unm 26 Cooper both b Ire. 2 other married couples at same address.
The difference in their ages compared to 1851 could help in finding them in 1841, all the Devitt's in one household, I hope.
Happy Hunting Tina

Hi all
Thanks Tina, Tony and Colette for replying.

Tony and Colette, Virgil St. Lennons are a no go. I have a birth cert. for Mary Ann, their daughter. That particular Thomas Lennan from 1851 and 1861 is the Grease Melter/Grease Dealer who's wife Mary is ní Hughes.

I hope I'm not too late to have stopped your search for this Colette.

Thanks
Tony

Hi all
I omitted some information that may have partly helped with the Lennon hunt and that is the address of Peter when he got married. I've only just put two and two together but feel a bit  stupid for not realising sooner.

It doesn't really change much but here goes ....

Peter Lennon married Mary Roberts 1890
Peter's address 8CT Burlington Street
Mary's address 80 Burlington Street (her parent's address also - confirmed in the 1891 census)

Thomas Lennon death certificate of 1883
Thomas' address 8CT 11H Burlington Street

Why it doesn't change much... because this address cannot be found on the 1881 census. St. Martins District 22 8CT/7 (image no. 11) is as high as it gets. I even tried District 23 where there is more of Burlington Street but found nothing. Can someone double check this please. I'm going cross eyed with looking.

What is the first recorded date for Alien abductions anybody?

I'm going now - I've been cut off my Broadband that many times tonight I'm giving up. :x Also I don't want to spend another night in my dreams asking everyone in 19C Liverpool if they've seen any Lennons. "Oh you mean the Lemons" everyone replies... "they live next door to the Oranges down the road".
Goodnight

:lol  I'm soooo glad there's still humour

I'm just about fizzled out here. I was checking for Alexander Douglas's and came across an Alexander Davitt. Started thinking that maybe his Mum remarried a Davitt, then realised I was totally thinking about Lemon/Lennons and not Douglas's and Rourkes!

Hi Tony,

Just a little hint here. I've often found myself typing lengthly posts only to submit it and I've timed out, so now if I'm doing a long post, I highlight it and copy it, so I can paste it if it does happen to time out.

Hi all
I’m back on line – Talk Talk must have been down for most of the night.
Simone, I had forgotten about the Cowley family in 1891  . I had just presumed that Peter aged 17 had stayed on at his father, Thomas’ house when he had died. Obviously he would have moved in with big sis (probably) .

Anyway, I have a few things that need putting down in one place to clarify things for everyone. Mainly who was living next door or near to other family from 1881 – 1891 in Burlington Street.

1881 Census
72 Burlington Street
Henry Cowley 36 Boilermaker
Margaret A 35

1881 Census - St. Martin/District 22/page 11
8CT 7H Burlington Street
John Gannon 32 Boiler Maker
Mary A Gannon 31
Mary E Dutton 6 Niece

It is a big coincidence if this is not the same John Gannon who is
married to Mary A nee Lennon living in Burlington Street.
The only problem being the ages
On the marriage cert. in 1878 John is 24 and a Rivet Maker (originally thought to be Brick Maker) while Mary A is 21.
So in 1881 they should be 27 and 24, It also seems a big
change of occupation for John.

1883 Death Certificate
8CT 11H Burlington Street
Thomas Lennon

1890 Marriage Certificate
8 CT Burlington Street
Peter Lennon
80 Burlington Street
Mary Roberts

1891 Census
8 CT 8H Burlington St
Henry Cowley 45 Boiler Maker
Mary A Cowley 37 (formerly Mrs. Mary A Gannon nee Lennon)
George Dale 25
Tom Lennon 17 b-in-law- dock labourer

If i've missed anyone out I'll edit this another time on this page.

Now I think its almost certain that Thomas Lennon was at the same address in 1881 as he was in when he died in 1883. I wonder what was going on with the enumerator missing out on the address. Maybe nobody was in and he went back there later. That would probably explain the anomaly you found on page 25 Simone – he returned to the street and the family were home whereas maybe our Lennons weren’t and he didn’t bother again. (and the same in ‘51/’61/’71 ….)  .

Enough for tonight. Thanks for the tips about saving long documents in Word first – I should know that being a teacher of I’T. (amongst other things). My pupils will be laughing if they read this.
Thanks all

Why not look at that address on the 1881 - 1883 voters roll :?:

Hi all
This has slipped to the third page so I thought I'd give you an update before I leave these shores in search of other branches.

Two recent certs. I received were no good. :x

Mary Lennon 63 died 01/04/1888
widow of James Lennon
living at 19 Scotland Place

Thomas Lennon (I thought this would be our Tom, 17 in 1891)
born 24/01/1875 (I now think our Tom would be 1874 but there isn't one)
Father Joseph - Painter
Mother - Catherine.

My short visit to the RO didn't turn up much for the Lennon's in Burlington St. I only managed to look at the 1882 electoral register (after much wrestling with the micro-fiche machine -it was my first time, and keeping my 3 year old from unravelling everything  - I know... I know...  ).
So... no Lennons except a change of address for John Gannon and Mary ní Lennon to 34CT 4H Burlington St. (they weren't well travelled these people where they :) ).
I'll be better prepared next time I promise - but if no one has anything better to do when they are down there, you could do the '83 for me ... and of course there's Johnson St. too.

Bye for now

Hi Tina and Simone
thanks for thinking of me :D .

for the record -
1871
RG10 3767 142 22
3 COURT 5 HOUSE MILTON ST
: Name Age
B Breman 8
J S Breman 30
M Breman 28
A Lemmeran 7
C Lemmeran 46
D Lemmeran 8
M Lemmeran 15
B Rooney 18
M Rooney 40
M A Rooney 8
Margaret Rooney 3
An interesting variation on Lennon that I've not seen before. I don't think any of them are mine though - only the initial M corresponds to any I already know about :( .

Hi Simone
I found the link accidently  . I had read it a couple of days ago and had noticed the similarities in the the Carberrys first names :? . The Lennons did live at Ashfield Cottages, the Hennessey's (including my dad) lived at Westmoreland Place and someone else (who I can't remember off-hand) lived in Silvester Street  . The thought has crossed my mind that Lennons were using different aliases and this is one of them. I'll have a look at the census when I get Ancestry back on. (Hopefully I've got 3 free months with buying their software :D ).

thanks
