Szabo

My late grandmother at some time between 1946 and 1955 worked 'in service' for a Liverpool family; I have a bed sheet she either appropriated, or was given, and it has a red laundry mark "Szabo".

Suggestions would be welcome as to how I can trace who she worked for, and where?

I would start with the Street/Trade directories and see what you come up with, got to be something there, there are may on Ancestry but it's possible you might need to check with the Library and book the microfilms.

That name has always stuck in my mind from when I was at school and they showed us the film "Carve Her Name with Pride", Violet Szabo, made us all cry.

Did your grandmother live in with the family? If so check the electoral rolls.

Thanks retiringtype, I am not sure. I did find her in 1950 living Markfield Road, Bootle.

It was many years ago that I checked electoral rolls at Crosby Library, something I cannot do at present. Are there any online electoral rolls please?

Ancestry has electoral rolls for the City of Liverpool up to 1970.

A hint for searching them on Ancestry, only about every fifth year is indexed, however you can use the drop down year box at the top to browse the in between years.
