Irish centres
Irish centres
Hi all, is there anywhere that would have a look at Irish centres in Liverpool circa 1920? I can see there was one on Boundary Lane off Rocky Lane and seem to remember one near Millers Bridge in Bootle, and also one by Mount Pleasant in Liverpool. Apparently my grandparents met in one. They lived in Armstrong Street and Lemon Street so trying to work out which one it may have been. Thanks, John

Re: Irish centres
I''ve found reference to one
Saint Michael's Irish Centre, 6 Boundary Lane, West Derby Road, Liverpool, L6 5JG - A community centre for the promotion of cultural and social activities for the Irish community in Merseyside.
But I was thinking there was one on the bottom end of Netherfield Road or is it called Everton Road? Whether personal enquiries might prove useful I don't know.
Having a browse around I also found this site which looks informative, perhaps they would have some knowledge https://sites.rootsweb.com/~fianna/
Remembering my own parents talking about going out dancing or whatever, I don't think distance mattered a great deal to them, there always seemed to be public transport to get them there and back.
I don't know Armstrong Street but I think Lemon Street is in Kirkdale, so not so far away from the West Derby Road area.

Re: Irish centres
Thanks Mary. Lemon Street is off Stanley Road not far from the Rotunda. Armstrong Street was off Knowsley Road. They are only 3 miles away from each other. I'm sure many a Corpy bus or the equivalent went between them
. Thanks for the link, will do some more digging!
