John Cartner.

Post by Katie »

Would anyone be able to help one of our members.

He is trying to locate his great-grandfather John Cartner, born 16th March 1848, mother Hannah, no father recorded on the birth certificate on the 1851 census. Hannah, married James Maddrell, a book keeper, in St Nicholas Church, Liverpool, on the 21st of December 1853, when John was five years old. Hannah, of full age, gave her address as Church Street, and named her father as Joseph Cartner, a weaver.
In the 1861 census we find John, a scholar, living with his mother, Hannah, and stepfather, James Maddrell, a book keeper, at 239 Great Homer Street, Liverpool. Here Hannah (transcribed as Hanah) gives her age as 41 (so born approximately 1820) and her place of birth as Cumberland. John is entered as John ditto, so appears to have been accepted by James Maddrell as his son. Can anyone have a go at picking John Cartner up on the 1851.

FreeBMD has the death of a John Cartner in March 1881 in Liverpool aged 33. That would tie in with his birth of 1848.
CARTNER, JOHN.33. GRO Reference: 1881 M Quarter in LIVERPOOL Volume 08B Page 206

1851 census has a John Cartner, grandson age 3 living in Millhill, Longtown, Cumberland, England with John Carter, his wife Mary. Don't think this is correct as no Hannah and GRO birth states Carlisle and not Liverpool and the grandfather's name is wrong.

Coming to the same conclusion as Bert unfortunately :( .

Hi,
The Genealogist has this one :
Ref HO107/2187/F 1851

John Carter born Liverpool 1843

Mother Hannah born 1817 Whitehaven Cumberland living with Henry Carter born 1817.

Address is 10 Mann Street Toxteth Park.

Hope this helps to discount it or not

I have just checked the 1851 census entry for Hannah Carter and Henry Carter. I think we can rule this one out as Hannah Carter is the wife of Henry. Thanks.
