1841 Census - Transcription help please

I have found some of my ancestors in the 1841 census - but I'm having trouble making out an occupation.

It concerns the Slater family who were living in Banastre Street at the time (HO107 Piece 557 Folio 38 Page 26)

The head of the household Benjamin SLATER was a Sawyer (as confirmed by later Census returns), age rounded down to 35 (he was aged around 38 at the time).

My issue concerns his eldest son, Edward SLATER, who is showing as aged 15 on the census return, which has been rounded down from his actual age which was around 17 at the time (he was born sometime around 1824).

Unfortunately I can't fully make out his occupation. It appears to begin as A.P. Sl...

In the 1851 Census he is recorded as being a Sawyer, like his father.



Does anyone have any ideas?

AP could mean apprentice (normally recorded as Ap though). Looks like Slaters something, but can't find that in any census list.

Agree with John,

AP for apprentice, Slater is spelt and looks like the name,

I was thinking of Slaters plas, Plas being a shortened version of plaster or plasterer, When a slate roof was fitted a white lime plaster was spread to the slates on the inside to prevent draughts and the wind getting below the slates and lifting off.

Plasterer could be a possibility, as his younger brother John is listed in the 1851 Census as a plasterer.
