Nathan Abbott Innkeeper of Bold

Post by egandy »

My ancestor Nathan Abbott, an innkeeper of Bold, died in 1727. In his will he refers to two pieces of property that he owns. The handwriting in the will is difficult to interpret, but it looks like Mosswaye Cottage and a piece of land called Newlay, “lawly purchased from Thomas Blackburn of Bold”. In his will Nathan also mentions others: Robert Knowls and Richard Traviss who are appointed trustees to the will and witnesses John Haddock, Thomas Esich?? and J.W Cawley. Nathan signed with his X-mark. The appointment of Knowls and Traviss was certified (in latin) by Johan Mapletoft.
Does anyone familiar with the Bold area have any ideas about the names and location of Nathan’s property, or the persons mentioned in his will? Any help greatly appreciated.

I wonder if a visit to St Helens library might prove useful as they may have some old maps that cover the area. The early maps are usually printed with the names of family houses/farms etc.

We have many links to maps on this thread but a lot of them may be centred on Liverpool, worth trying though. https://www.lswlfhs.org.uk/phpBB3/viewt ... hilit=maps

Thank you Mary and Bert for the help.
Of course I should have edited my previous post or removed it. My apologies- not very familiar with the forum yet.

Eric,

No need for apology or removal of other thread, making other enquiry known saves duplicating.

Thank you for the link. I have found a number of tithe maps for the area which I hope are available on line as I live abroad. Cheers Eric Gandy

The manorial Records of Bold Hall may assist you. According to the MDR Cheshire Archives has a couple of collections containing maps from 1702 ( a bit early) and 1727-1730.

Hi Alex
Thank you so much for the suggestion and link. I had no idea that these were available. Nathan Abbott was born in 1690 so his family were living there before 1702.
Cheers
