Two John Jones, both Mariners, died 1767 and 1769

Post by louis »

Can anyone on the forum help with this query?

I’m trying to find out which one of the two John Jones was the husband of Catherine Jones. They were both mariners, one died in 1767 and the other in 1769.

Catherine Loyd (spinster) m. John Jones (mariner) at St. Nicholas, Liverpool, on the 14th May, 1767.
Two years later she is a widow at her marriage to Thomas Grigson (Gregson) at St. Nicholas, Liverpool, on the 5th December, 1769 (by Licence).

The only two Liverpool deaths of a John Jones whose occupation is a mariner on the burial record and between the dates of Catherine’s marriages are: –
John Jones (Mariner of Ormond Street) bur. 25th August, 1767 at St Nicholas, and John Jones (Mariner) bur. 8th July, 1769 at St. Peter, Liverpool. No age is given for either record.

There does not appear to be a surviving will and I cannot find any other supporting documentation that links Catherine to either of them.

Possible issue:-
Margaret Jones, daughter of John Jones, mariner, baptised 11th June, 1769, at St. Peter, Liverpool. Born 26th May.

No positive leads with Margaret, just a lot of possibilities.

The only records I know of which may provide the answer are:-
a) Williamson's Liverpool Advertiser - May 28 1756 to 11 August 1769 (held only at Liverpool Record Office).
b) Liverpool Rate Books (if they survive from the 1760’s).
c) MI’s from the churchyard cemeteries of St Nicholas and St Peter.

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Sorry no John Jones MI's in Gibsons for that date.

From the 1766 Gores Directory
Jones, Captain John, Frederick Street

Not in the 1767, nor 1769

I believe there is a list of Captains on microfiche at the library, I don't know the dates they cover.

Thanks for your help Mary.

Gores 1772/1773 has John Jones in Frederick Street (no occupation stated), however, in 1774 the listing is Capt. John Jones 11 Frederick Street, so probably the same one as in Gores 1766.

I’ll contact the Library about the list of Captains.
