Birth records

Post by JohnnyO »

Hi, I am having problems locating the birth record of one of my ancestors, Mary Orrett. Parents were Thomas Orrett and Isabella Metcalfe.

She is in the 1881 census aged 9, and possibly in 1891 as a servant. Mary Louisa Horrit is in the Liverpool, England, Church of England Baptisms, 1813-1917 as being baptised on May 27th 1873. The entry alongside reads 2 years and 2 months old. The day after, her brother Thomas Wright Horrit was baptised. Both parents were Thomas and Isabella from West Derby, he being a farmer.

I have the rest of the children; John Edmund born in 1868, Thomas Wright in 1873, Henry (my grandfather) in 1876, Margaret Jane in 1880 and Herbert in 1884. All are in GRO with a few variations of spelling of either Orrett and Metcalfe, but Mary eludes me! I have tried as many variations as I can think of, and looked at FreeBMD to cross reference the District, Volume and page.

Any thoughts from you good people? :(

Thanks, John

I tried to find this yesterday without any luck. If the birth was registered it should come up even if it is under an alternative spelling. After trying various combinations on Free BMD and the GRO site without success it left me thinking that this birth was probably not registered.

I too tried also using a combination of methods.

LancsOPC will only give you baptisms which you have already.

The indexes are far from 100% accurate, it could well be one of those that have slipped the net but might be registered, my suggestion would be to calculate the correct birth date and telephone the GRO and explain that you can't find the entry in the indexes however you have the name and more or less accurate date, and include the mother's maiden name. If they don't manage to find it with these details they will refund your money, I have found them to be very helpful in the past with similar situations.

You could try St George's Hall register office. They have the originals , I believe, and sometimes find those that are missing. Might be worth a try or even a visit. Good Luck
