liverpool workhouse records

I have found the death of Richard Hand,schoolmaster, age 54 (bronchitis) and his place of death is the Workhouse. His wife also is listed as being there in 1840.
Richard was on the 1851 census as living with his brother William therefore he must have went into the workhouse after that.

Is there any way I can get info as to why he went there etc.?

thank you but now have another question - could not make out the writing/meaning of what looks like Died in street wd. (same place as he was admitted). Was th workhouse also a hospital?

Yes the workhouse was often the place to go to when sick as this would be where the doctors were.

There are some entries that far back but they don't look complete there's not enough of them perhaps they have been copied over from an earlier register to show people still in the Workhouse. The links are on this page:-

The records I had a look at are "Admissions and discharges 1840-1849" the Hs from around 1840 are too few they look like they have been selectively copied over from an earlier register so Ann's record will be one of the many not copied over perhaps because she was deceased and no longer there:-

thank you for this information. I am doing the research on behalf of my son-in-laws mother. she thought she was pure Northern Irish till I turned up this wee gem!
