Salvation House Everton

Hi all, I posted in another forum about a father's name missing from a birth certificate. Ordered the certificate, arrived today, no clue .

However.the place of birth on the certificate is 107 Rice Lane (near Queen's Drive flyover). The name, surname and maiden surname of mother is stated as Agnes Smith, a step cleaner of Salvation House (or Home) Everton. The informant was a CAW Roberts, occupier of 107 Rice Lane.

I have had a look at 107 Rice Lane on the 1911 census on FMP but cannot find it. Also looked up Agnes Smith in Walton and Kirkdale but cannot find her at Rice Lane or in an institution.

Was Salvation House a poorhouse or workhouse, any idea? Not even sure if it the same address.

I haven't yet researched Salvation House but 107 Rice Lane was the West Derby Union Workhouse. It had an infirmary which later became Walton Hospital.

Could be this place - Anne Fowler Salvation Home Everton.

I would suspect Alex's suggestion is correct, in the right place and if you check this photograph plenty of steps to be cleaned

Interesting reading, thanks all. Couple of thoughts:

Agnes should be somewhere in the 1911 census but cant see her at 107 Rice Lane. If she was at Anne Fowler then that should be recorded? The fact the birth is 5 years after the census does not help.

Walter, Agnes' child was born at 107 Rice Lane (West Derby Union workhouse). Would that be because they delivered babies there and not at Salvation House? I would imagine that Anne Fowler was residential (if you can call it that).

C Roberts informed about the birth. Cant make out the name properly. Residence is 'occupier' 107 Rice lane. It looks like he/she was in the workhouse. Wonder if it is male was he the father or not. I can't find a subsequent marriage record for them.

Usually when an event is in an institution/hospital and the informant is described as occupier they turn out to be an official rather than an inmate/patient.

Thanks Blue. I have searched for 107 Rice Lane in FMP but it does not appear. I have also searched for 'Roberts' in the 1911 census, with no result, although I suppose they might have been at home at the time of the census.

If you want to find the West Derby Union Workhouse in the 1911 census, just search for Ernest Gotts. He was the Master of the workhouse. There are 2,600 names in that particular return, staff and inmates. I don't see a C Roberts.

It appears that Colin Roberts became Master of the workhouse circa 1915.

Just read this: At the meeting of the West Derby Guardians, yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. W. Roberts were appointed master and" matron of the Walton Workhouse, in sueecsMon to and Mr*. Gotta, now superintendent and matron of the new Alder Hey Hospital. 12 February 1915 - Liverpool Daily Post - Liverpool, Merseyside. Presume that is why he is not in the 1911 census return for the workhouse.

I have no idea if Agnes Smith was a minor or related to my wife's great grandfather Walter Smith. The previous mothers of his children were both called Alice. Whether he shacked up with Agnes goodness knows.
