I would be very grateful for help with finding somebody on the 1901 census.
Mary Graley (nee McGreevy) died in Walton Workhouse in October 1909.Her husband Thomas had died in 1901. I can find Thomas on the 1901 census, Living with his brother and sister-in law but there’s no sign of Mary.
Both Thomas and Mary are missing from the 1891 census. I know they were extremely poor so I have spent sometime looking at Workhouse records at the library but still can find no trace.
I would welcome any suggestions for how I may be able to find any more information,
Many thanks

Re: 1901 Census
Hi and welcome to the forum.
If she was already an inmate in the Workhouse then her entry in the census may be denoted as just initials, ie M M. I's difficult to be certain from the results list without a date of birth.

Re: 1901 Census
Thank you.Your help is much appreciated.
I have just noticed that she was the informant on her husbands death certificate. He died in July 1901 yet it doesn’t seem that she was living with him at the time of the census.

Re: 1901 Census
Apologies for the delay in replying - I had mislaid the certificate.
On the certificate the address given for Thomas Graley is 13 Fletcher Street. This address is also given for the informant -
“The mark of Mary Graley widow of deceased present at the death 13 Fletcher Street Toxteth Park.”
However she is not listed at this address (although Thomas was) in the 1901 census. The date of death was 2nd July 1901.
Many thanks.

Re: 1901 Census
Do you have any evidence of the family being in the workhouse because of poverty are they in any of the workhouses on any census records? Lots of people died in workhouses in the same way people these days die in hospitals as they were places of care. The Liverpool Workhouse records are now available to view on Family Search when signed in but similar records have not survived for Walton (West Derby Union) and Toxteth.

Re: 1901 Census
Thank you Blue. What you have said would seem to suggest a clearer picture.
I know that Mary’s daughter (Susannah) was in the workhouse in 1881 and was later sent to Canada by the Nugent Society and I think Mary was also in Brownlow Hill at this point. I cannot find her in 1891 and 1901.
I have been to Liverpool records office but been unable to trace anything. As you state, there are very few records for Walton that survive.
Returning to what Blue said; on the death certificate for Mary (1909) the place of death was given as the workhouse but her actual address is stated as 60 Northumberland Terrace which is her daughters address on the 1911 census. So I imagine that she was living with her daughter but went in the workhouse when she became ill.
However, I still can’t work out where she was in 1901. On the census she isn’t shown at the address where her husband was but she gives this as her address when he died a few weeks later.
Many thanks for all your help.
