FMP has Electoral Registers 1832-1932 and covers 1901.

Pre WW1 electoral rolls are not as useful as later ones because a lot less people were able to vote.

Thank you for the tips everyone. I didn’t get anywhere with the special collections accessed via Ancestry. FMP had 4 results but I couldn’t view them because I don’t have a subscription (I’ve got Ancestry).

Here is my problem:
It’s about my ancestor David John Jones, born c1874 in Neath, Glamorgan, Wales.
On the 1891 census he was a collier (coalman) living in Neath with his widowed step-mother, Mary Jones (formerly Jenkins).

On 25th December 1901, aged 27, he married Mary Jane Shields at St. Athanasius Church in the parish of Walton-on-the-Hill in Liverpool. His occupation was given as a railway porter. Both the bride and the groom were living at 23 Chancel Street.
On 9th October 1902 their son, Arthur David, was born at 55 Hughes Street, West Derby, Liverpool. Father’s occupation: railway porter.

On 30th August 1904 their second son, Percy Gilbert, was born in Pontypool, Glamorgan. Father’s occupation: colliery labourer.
It doesn’t seem like the same person but I have the marriage and birth certificates (and a family story) so I know they are correct.
I am trying to find out: “When did David John first go to Liverpool? What was he doing there? When did he leave”. I thought I would look up 23 Chancel Street on the electoral register and go backwards from December 1901 to see how long he lived there, and search for his name (if possible) to see if he lived anywhere else. Then look up 55 Hughes Street from 1902 and go forward.

I think I have found him on the 1901 census but I’m not sure. There is a David Jones, aged 26, from Glamorgan in the David Lewis Northern Hospital working as a porter (hospital). Is this the same person?

Can anyone help me with this please, fresh eyes would be a blessing because I am really going round in circles.
I can't go to Liverpool to look it up myself because I live in the Netherlands.

This is a really difficult way of trying to trace movements because of a number of factors:-

1. Many people do not appear on the registers at this time
2. People moved very frequently in those days from tenancy to tenancy
3. No search is available for these registers at the Liverpool Record Office

I've just tried a free search on FMP clicking on all the Liverpool constituency/divisions looking for the name David Jones 1901 + or - 2 years and nothing came up in the results so the site may have some records for c1901 but maybe not for Liverpool.

Family Search have some voter registers but not for 1901:-

Electoral registers for Lancashire, 1832-1910

They do have 1900. You can view these when signed in I've had a look through some of these records and a lot of the voters appear to be property owners:-

Could David John Jones still be in Wales on the 1901 census? FMP census records are free at the moment I did a search and noticed there was a David John Jones at 24, Jersey Road, Abergwynp, Glyncorrwg, Neath, Glamorganshire, Wales with a widowed mother Mary and brothers William and Edwin could this be him?:-

On the 1901 census 23 Chancel Street Kirkdale is not occupied. For reference to make it easier to find, at 21 was William Emery, age 49, railway policeman, born in Northamptonshire & family and at 25 was John Bromilow, age 39, blacksmith, born in Liverpool & family. At 55 Hughes Street was George Bailey, age 37, paint carter, born in Millbrook Hampshire & family.

Hello Blue (Does that mean you are an Everton supporter?)
Thanks for all the help.
I didn’t have the baptism of Arthur David Jones, I’ve got the birth certificate a PDF download from the GRO. The birth was registered on 7th November 1902 by his mother and her residence was given as 55 Hughes Street. This is also the address given for where Arthur David was born. Could this be a hospital and the family were living at Chancel Street ? That would make more sense. Could the address in Chancel Street be a lodging house, because David John was living there at the time of his wedding and so was his future bride. Or were they ‘living in sin’? Their first child came along at a respectable 10 months later though.
It’s possible that David John Jones was with his widowed mother in Wales for the 1901 census because his father was deceased at the time of his wedding in December 1901. I don’t know his mother’s name though, I can’t narrow down a birth certificate. It’s a nightmare looking for these Joneses! I latched gleefully on to the David Jones in the David Lewis Hospital on the 1901 because of the words Glamorgan and porter. Also it seems likely that he was in Liverpool then ‘wooing’ his future wife.

Yes I'm an Everton supporter so I will be disappearing soon to watch the match. Both properties mentioned were terraced houses. The address on marriage records is not too important couples often gave the same address within the parish of the church. What was David's father's name and occupation on the 1901 marriage record? Many people moved around back then to try to find work and the housing situation was flexible to facilitate a lot of house moves.

Commiserations for the result of the Arsenal game. My brother won’t be too happy either being a blue but I am a red myself, inherited from my Dad.
David’s father’s name was: David Rees Jones and he was a tin worker.
Interestingly enough 2 of the bride’s brothers were living at 38 Chancel Street on the 1901 census.
The bride herself (Mary Shields) was living in Wallasey working as a cook for a family of Liverpool brewers. I wonder how she met David John?

Do you have their 1881 census record? I think it's as follows:-

57 Bowen Street Neath

David R Jones, H, M, 35, Bar Roller in Tin Works, Neath Glamorganshire
Selina Jones, W, M, 30, - wife, Carmarthenshire
David J Jones, Son, 8, scholar, Neath Glamorganshire
Samuel Jones, Son, 6, scholar, Neath Glamorganshire
William Jones, Son, 4, scholar, Neath Glamorganshire
Elizabeth Jones, Daughter, 1, Bar Roller's daughter, Neath Glamorganshire

Bowen Street is not far from Taylors Row where David, Samuel and William appear to be living with step mother Mary in 1891. Mother Selina appears to have died in 1882:-

Death Index

Name: Selina Jones
Quarter: Jan/Feb/Mar
Year: 1882
Age: 32
District: Neath
Volume: 11a
Page: 409

Possible marriage for David R and Selina:-

Names: David Jones & Selina Williams
Quarter: Jul/Aug/Sep
Year: 1871
District: Neath
Volume: 11a
Page: 753

The surname Williams matches births for various children on the GRO index, that index includes the mothers' surnames. A particularly good match is the Selina Jones on the 1891 census as there was only one person of this name born in Neath around that time and the GRO index gives her mother's surname as Williams. She was born the same quarter as her mother Selina died. I think this is David John's birth index:-

Name: David John Jones
Quarter: Jul/Aug/Sep
Year: 1872
Mother's surname: Williams
District: Neath
Volume: 11a
Page: 530

There's a possible Neath marriage in 1883 of a David Jones and Mary Jenkins that could be the father's marriage to step mother Mary. It's always difficult researching Jones and this family isn't straight forward so it's particularly tricky.

I think I've found the above family on the 1891 census at Pontrhydyfen House, Barracks Row, Michaelstone, Neath, Glamorganshire, Wales so we can discount them now:-

David Jones H M 46 Glamorganshire, Wales Glover
Mary Jones W M 42 Glamorganshire, Wales
David J Jones Son S 18 Glamorganshire, Wales Glover
William Jones Son S 17 Glamorganshire, Wales Glover
Edwin Jones Son S 15 Glamorganshire, Wales Glover
Henry Jones Son S 13 Glamorganshire, Wales Glover

I'm not sure that your David John Jones is the David Jones working at David Lewis Northern Hospital in Liverpool in 1901 David Jones is a very common name but it's a possible match.

Everything you’ve found matches up with what I have. I’ve got David John on the 1881 census, also on the 1891 with his stepmother Mary Jones, formerly Jenkins and various siblings. I’ve also got David R.’s marriage cert to Selina Williams, and later to Mary Jenkins plus David R.’s death cert.

I’ve got the birth certificate for David John which you mentioned but I convinced myself that it wasn’t the correct one because the dates don’t seem to match. On the cert he was born 20th September 1872 in Melincrythan, Neath but that would make him 29 when he married in 1901, not 27.
So I was thinking that this his mother’s name and this whole branch was wrong.

Having thought about it a bit more it’s probably the most likely family. I think I had a case of ‘genealogy-itis’which scrambled my brain. I got disheartened so decided to try and trace David John’s time in Liverpool.
I agree with you, I am not absolutely convinced that David John was working in the hospital on the 1910 census. He was a railway porter at the time of his marriage so would he have been working for the Great Western Company then?

I've never found any of my railway men, labourers/porters/loaders etc, in any available records so it will probably be difficult to find out more.

Ancestry now has a collection of Liverpool electoral registers. You can use the search to find records at five year intervals or use the browse to find the years between.

Liverpool, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1970
