veterinary records

Post by JohnnyO »

Hi all, I have received a copy marriage certificate from 1877. The bride's father was shown as a veterinary surgeon. I would like to delve a bit deeper. Does anyone know where I can look up any records? The person in question is a George Eames and the marriage was in Kensington, London. Many thanks,John.

The official Veterinary Society has records but charge £30!

This is a new one on me, googling seems to give the information that not a lot of archives are held publicly until about the 1950s and even then there was the minimum of details, I had a farrier back in the 1840/50s that I thought perhaps had been apprenticed through the father or a local vet, I wonder if this could be a line worth following, Apprentice Indentures?

Thanks Mary. I've had a look at apprentice records but cannot find anything. I presume he must have been a well educated man to take up that profession.

Interesting family. All came from Bridlington. Number one son was arrested for stealing saddles from his father. Number 2 son was jailed for threatening his father with violence! Still no veterinary notes but it appears that he was left penniless after being a vet at a racecourse and losing all his money. His grandson somehow ended up in Myrtle Street in the 1911 census in a children's home for fatherless and destitute children, possibly due to his father gambling as well.
