144a Brownlow Hill UD

Post by liverbirdie »

First time posting, so forgive if i'm in the wrong place. I was just browsing through some stuff on this site were someone in america was trying to get info on the cottage homes in fazakerley.Tehy mentioned in the post about someone possibly in a workhouse. Now only the other day i see a copy of my mums birth cert and it says place of birth 144a Brownlow Hill UD. Now did notice this person did say it was also an infirmary. So how can i find out if it was just for the birth, or was my nan in the workhouse.

Hi

Welcome to the forum. Workhouse infirmaries were the forerunners of modern hospitals. When was the birth? There appears to have been a change in the 20th century with more babies being born in hospitals rather than at home.

Possibly depending on the date, your mother may have been born in the infirmary as Blue says, however if you have an idea that it may have been in the Workhouse, many of these records are held at the Liverpool Record Office.

The online registers (see link below, viewable when signed in to Family Search, registration and use is free) end c1915 probably due to the possibility of later records including living people. These records are available in full at the Liverpool Record Office. Many single women admitted themselves into workhouses just to have their babies then returned to normal life:-

If you can't get to Liverpool you could try contacting a local Family Search centre to see if it's possible to view their copies of these records. There's a centre in Romford you could e-mail them:-

is your mother's place of birth given as the same place as your grandmother's address when she registered the birth?

No mums place of birth was 144a brownlow hill, which I found out was the liverpool workhouse, so sent for mums original birth certificate, as she had a name change, and it says nans address was 4 starfield street. so hopefully that means mum was born in the workhouse infirmary.

Thank you MaryA
take it Starfield Street been demolished
Would anyone know what a kitchen maid (domestic) means. Some is obvious, but could it be a large house as in upstairs downstairs? So nan would lived either in the basement or the attic?

If you look at the 1911 census for 4 Starfield St, it gives a brief description of how many rooms it had, not counting a bathroom, lobby, etc. it had 5 rooms. She may have been a Kitchen maid but not necessarily at Starfield St, employed elsewhere.

So looks like a small house she lived in, so hard trying to piece things together. Wonder if thats her parents home?
Do you think there would be any photographs of houses in starfield street

I haven't come across any photographs for the street, however if you joined some of the Liverpool facebook groups there are many people who have access to old photographs who may have one and will be happy to share.
