Ellen Sword/Ellen Gibson

I then followed up a Sword link on the 1881 census: An Alicia Sword, a widowed school teacher from Liverpool, living in Foxhill Road with her 5 children, 4 of whom were born in the West Indies. I thought I might have found Thomas Taylor's widow but I couldn't find a suitable marriage record!

Re: Ellen Sword/Ellen Gibson
Thanks ever so much, Bert. Your findings make interesting reading and I'll certainly follow-up the leads and get it all written up.
The family link between Thomas T. Sword's wife and Antigua would seem to explain why he went out to the Caribbean in the early 1860s. I had a quick look to see if I could find Thomas T on the 1861 census as I am intrigued to know what he was a merchant of but I couldn't see him. The 1891 census has his son William working as a 'clerk in the cotton... (can't quite make out the last word)' so I am fearing the worst as to what Thomas might have been a merchant of!
Your findings in the Toxteth Park Burials has also given me the incentive to have a further look in these types of records and see if I can track down some of those 'missing links' that I have put question marks by over the years.

Re: Ellen Sword/Ellen Gibson
I was hoping to find something helpful here,
http://www.antiguanationalarchives.org/?page_id=43
However, the marriage register index won't let me play, in Digital Resources, Marriage Register Index, St John's 1859-2000.
Hopefully someone will have more luck.

Re: Ellen Sword/Ellen Gibson
Thanks both.
I had never heard of this site but have tried Bert’s link - got a list of names but , like Mary, I couldn’t see an entry for Thomas T.
I also saw a link to Caribbean records on Ancestry but could bring up nothing at all there!
Interestingly, TT’s eldest son, Thomas, was born in Liverpool according to the 1881 census. I think this may be Thomas Henry (1863 July-September lover 8b 190) but I cannot find a baptism record so may need to send for the certificate to confirm. Seems tight timing between marrying in Antigua in October 1862 and registering a birth in England in the 3rd qtr of 1863!

Re: Ellen Sword/Ellen Gibson
Glen,
Perhaps Thomas Henry was baptised in the West Indies.
The image will be William Sword, Bn, Dec11, 1864, reported in the Liverpool Mercury, Jan 2, 1865.

Re: Ellen Sword/Ellen Gibson
Thanks, Louis - things seem to be working better Down Under than over here!
Thanks for the obit as well. Bert. I tried to access the original on the British Newspaper Archives website as I reckoned it probably appeared the Liverpool Daily Post given the date but I got a bit stuck on that site too - will try again later!
I owe you an apology as well Bert as I was repeating info you had already given when I said TT's eldest son had been born in Liverpool. Still suggests the Swords came back to England for the birth of their 1st child but didn't bother for the other 5 (4 children named on the census + Millicent buried with her father in Antigua).
Just wondering whether there is anything in the Liverpool Mercury about his birth but you may already have checked that, Bert.
Are you accessing the newspaper records via the British Newspaper Archives or are you using Findmypast?

Glen,
There's nothing I can see for the birth of Thomas Henry.
At the moment I can only access British Library Newspapers through my Library membership.
