A shop in Walton, L4 in the 1940's

Post by lost_in_space »

Hi everybody!

I'm a total newbie to genealogy, but here goes... there was a shop on/off City Road, Walton around 1940. It was owned by Joe Wilkes/Wilks? My mum, Winifred 'Winnie' Hampson, left school at 14 and started work there. Can anybody give me any info about the shop at all? Some of my mum's friends from the local area were: Gertie (Gertrude) Newbold, Sydney Wynne, Rosemary Wilson, and the Pye sisters - Betty & Sylvia.

Many thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Presumably the Wilk(e)s didn't live "over the shop" as nobody of that name appears in City Road in the 1939 Register.

Still browsing through the 1938 Kellys directory and if I come across anything I'll post again.

Added - no Wilkes listed in City Road, possibly misremembered the name? there is a Wilcoxson Rt. at Number 26, a grocer?

Thanks, Mary. Wilcoxson could be a possibility, 'Wilkes/Wilks' may have been a nickname/shortened version. I don't know if the shop was a grocer's or not, it's certainly a possibility. My mum lived in Nimrod Street. Thanks for the info on 'getting started'.
