John & Sarah Entwistle (nee Longworth) - Bolton 1900 - 1911
John & Sarah Entwistle (nee Longworth) - Bolton 1900 - 1911
Hi everyone
This is my first post on here and after reading and re-reading all the notes, hoping I provide all the relevant information!
I have hit a tiny wall and wandering if any of you may be able to shed some light on John Entwistle....!
Information I have so far:
Lily Entwistle (my Great Grandmother) married Theodore Holroyd is 25 April 1925 - St Johns, Blackpool.
Lily Entwistle aged 23, father: John Entwistle (deceased), Residence: 9 Albert Road, Blackpool
Kelly Directory 1924: Mrs Sarah Entwistle, 9 Albert Road, Blackpool
1911 Census: (Residence: 83 Arnold Street Bolton)
Registration District: Bolton
Sub-Registration District: Halliwell
Archive Reference: RG14
Registration District Number: 461
District Number: 16
Piece: 23324
John Entwistle b. 1877 Lancs Bolton Age 34 Warehouseman
Sarah Entwistle b. 1877 Lancs Bolton Age 34
Lily Entwistle b. 1902 Lancs Bolton Age 9 School
John Entwistle b. 1905 Lancs Bolton Age 5 School
Married: 10 Years
Children: 3 Born Alive, 1 Died
*******
1901 Census: (Residence: 244 Chorley Old Road)
Registration District: Bolton
Sub-Registration District: Halliwell
Archive Reference: RG13
Piece: 3607
Folio: 7
Page: 5
John Entwistle b. 1877 Lancs Bolton Age 24 Corn & Flour Dealer
Sarah Entwistle b. 1877 Lancs Bolton Age 24
*******
By looking on GRO/BMD - Sarah Entwistle maiden name is Longworth
Also, from memory, when I talked to my grandmother (Lily's daughter) who died in 1997, I recall her mentioning that Lily was a twin and that Lily's mother Sarah was also a twin. I think there were a few in the family, she even mentioned triplets to me - how much truth in that, no idea.
This seems to match records from looking online, as I can see a Sarah Entwistle born same time as Lily Entwistle, however did not survive.
Sarah Longworth born in 1877 to James & Ellen Longworth (nee Eckersley) was also a twin (Lilly Longworth b. 1877)
Sarah Longworth, I can track via census records
However, John Entwistle - there are loads of Entwistle's!! Plus, I am struggling slightly with my lack of knowledge of the area, even though my dad returned to Warrington recently
I have just ordered a birth certificate for Lily Entwistle (b. Sept 1901, Bolton, vol. 08c, pg 421), along with a marriage certificate for John Entwistle & Sarah Longworth (m. Dec 1900, Bolton, vol. 08c, pg 598) - as I could not find anything online for them.
Until I have the MC for John and Sarah, I have no idea who John Entwistle's father is - although there is one family that I have a feeling could be as - John Entwistle & Mary Parker, purely as on the 1901 census, William & Alice Entwistle (nee Howl) reside: 226 Chorley Old Road and was a Baker (John and Sarah lived at 244). They may be linked living so close!
For Lily, Sarah & John Entwistle - children of John & Sarah, I can see are entries for baptism: St Luke, Halliwell - Baptisms 1900 - 1907, Page 14, Entry 109
Is there anywhere I can find the above baptism entries? I have looked on family search - not even sure if these are online
Feel like I'm going round in circles looking at so many Entwistle's!!
Thank you for your help and hope I have provided enough information (and not too much and bored you all!)
Thanks

Re: John & Sarah Entwistle (nee Longworth) - Bolton 1900 - 1
You could try looking on the Lancashire online parish council site
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/
I found it very useful when I started and what is more it is free. Good hunting
Could not find John Entwistle and sarah Longworth marriage in 1900 on that site. Will try another.
I've looked on the 2 pay site I subscribe to and no luck there either. Sorry.
I found the marriage using Lancashire BMD. They were married at Christ Church, Heaton Bolton. This site does not give any other info, but it might help.

Re: John & Sarah Entwistle (nee Longworth) - Bolton 1900 - 1
Thank you Lynne99 for your reply and for also looking in to this for me too
I have had a look on the link you kindly provided over the last few days and have found it really useful and this is where I found the baptism entries for the 3 children of John and Sarah Entwistle. But I couldn't work out whether there was a way of seeing the baptism record film online, as I can't appear to find! I've searched on 2 paid sites that I on and also family search, but no luck!
I have just been unsuccessful in finding any marriage entry for them for John and Sarah also...although I have ordered the MC for them.
I have just been updating the Longworth family to see if I can find any other family members getting married and I did notice that Sarah's twin sister (Lilly Wardle, nee Longworth), her son Arthur got married in Blackpool in 1924, also resided at 9 Albert Road! So least I know I am on the right track with the address & surnames!
Just curious about John Entwistle...!
Thanks

Re: John & Sarah Entwistle (nee Longworth) - Bolton 1900 - 1
Thanks again Lynne99 - I had forgotten about that link actually....
Looks as John Entwistle and Sarah Longworth got married 1900 at: Bolton, Christ Church, Heaton
Just tried to see if I can look for the register on the other link and not on there and looks like a tiny little church - will have a look on some paid sites...
Thank you for the inspiration!

Re: John & Sarah Entwistle (nee Longworth) - Bolton 1900 - 1
Good suggestions by Lynne there, the Registers are probably held at the Lancashire Record Office in Preston who do an email service, although I can't remember what they charge they may have been able to send you a copy of the marriage.
Having had a diversion in my own tree into the further northern reaches of Lancashire I found the old newspapers of value. I would suggest that you join Lancashire Library online and once you have received your membership number find the old newspapers link on their site and you will be able to do some searches.

Re: John & Sarah Entwistle (nee Longworth) - Bolton 1900 - 1
Thank you MaryA for your advice and tips also.
Interesting about the old newspapers link - I have access to the British Newspaper Archive, which I have already searched through, but I am guessing this would be more of a local newspaper archive I would have access to. I do enjoy a newspaper archive, have to admit!!!
Thanks

It's not really local newspapers, there is quite a variety including the Liverpool Mercury, a Blackburn paper, a Dublin one and many more.

Re: John & Sarah Entwistle (nee Longworth) - Bolton 1900 - 1
Great, sounds like plenty to keep me quiet!!!
Hopefully the marriage certificate that is on order will help me with mainly John Entwistle and not add more confusion to Sarah Longworth!
Thank you,
Gem

Re: John & Sarah Entwistle (nee Longworth) - Bolton 1900 - 1
Afternoon all!
The excitement of Mr Postman arriving, who now knows I am doing my family tree!!
Marriage Certificate has arrived - the excitement!
Marriage Date: 12 December 1900 - Christ Church, Heaton
Groom: John Entwistle | Age 24 | Bachelor | Occupation: Corn Dealer | Residence: Heaton | Fathers Name: John Entwistle | Profession of Father: Clogger
Bride: Sarah Longworth | Age 24 | Spinster | Occupation: Blank | Residence: Heaton | Fathers Name: James Longworth (deceased) | Profession of Father: Inn-Keeper
Witnesses: Fred Butterworth & Minnie Entwistle
Which is good, as I had found a John Entwistle b. 1877, born to a John Entwistle & Mary Parker. He had a sibling, Minnie Entwistle - b. 1879. Minnie Entwistle, I think married a Fred Butterworth in 1902.
More researching, but one more of the puzzle ticked...I think!
Thanks,
Gem

Re: John & Sarah Entwistle (nee Longworth) - Bolton 1900 - 1
Thanks Bert, this is exactly the family I had my eye on!
I had saved the census reports, but with not being able to trace John Entwistle any further back on the 1901 census prior to his marriage and not finding any online marriage information, I couldn't be sure this was the right family. But, looking at the 1901 census on the same census as John & Sarah, you can see John Entwistle (the father), living with Minnie his daughter at 142 Hatfield Road - whilst John and Sarah Entwistle were living at 244 Chorley Old Road. Other siblings living close by too by the looks of it.
Hoping I can easily follow the line back as I believe Entwistle is fairly popular around that area
Already hit a small snag on Sarah Longworth's grandmother and spelling variations on a variety of documents!! Hehe!!
Thanks again Bert for your swift response,
Gem

Ada Entwistle is with Jonathan & Ann in 1881, so, Ada belonging to John and Mary still needs to be found? not registered?

Re: John & Sarah Entwistle (nee Longworth) - Bolton 1900 - 1
True, thanks Bert. I've just seen some entries, which ties up with what you mention with later entries (plus there is a William Entwistle b. 1871 - see below)
Mother Maiden Name - Stretch:

James Entwistle 1877 J Quarter in BOLTON Volume 08C Page 383

Guess I need to look at entries for "Stretch" now and see if John Entwistle was married before....no doubt her name was Mary!
