cookson family

Post by mitches1829 »

I am trying to find out how to go about getting electoral rolls for 1935 /1936 for Everton, Liverpool Nth districts.
Appreciate if any one can tell me how to locate these.

I am looking for Eileen or Ellen Cookson, who was living 44 Rupert Hill in january 1935.
The only thing I know about her is that she was a theatre attendant, and expect this was nearby somewhere.

Her grand daughters are looking for her, so any information regarding electoral rolls would be a big help.

I think they are held on film at the Liverpool Records Office, though, Mary will know more about that than me.

The Cookson name is not at 44 Rupert Hill, 1938 directory, which would have been compiled in 1937.

Was Cookson her birth/maiden name or married name?

Yes the Electoral Rolls are held at the Record Office

The nearest directory I have is the same as Bertieone, 1938 which gives Wltr Gallagher, Pantryman at that address.

re- eileen cookson.
On her daughter's birth certificate it just says eileen cookson, of 44 rupert Hill, everton, a Theatre attendant.
There is nothing further than that, so was hoping to find an electoral roll for that year to see if there was any one else listed, that I may be able to track and trace.
Someone must have known of her.

the 1939 tna register also shows walter gallagher at this address with wife and family. I am unsure whether she may have been a lodger, or family relative.

appreciate your help.

Sharene,

Having seen the birth certificate and the birth was at Mill Rd Maternity Hospital, I wonder if there is any mileage to be gained in those records, Eileen Cookson's birth date, etc. The child will still be closed? Perhaps the mothers details are available.

thank you bert,

Her daughter is now deceased, and the family would like to know more about their grandmother.
I believe an enquiry has already been made with the hospital, and limited information is held.
We would still like to locate electoral rolls for the time period, as these may hold a scant bit of information as to her background.

I will try and look into both hospital records and electoral rolls further.
thank you.

Is there just mother's details on the birth certificate? Do you know who the father was? Was the child later adopted and if so how long after the birth? There are Liverpool Affiliation Registers in the Liverpool Record Office showing putative father details for 1924-1964 [Reference: 347 MAG 3]. They are court registers with basic details of cases, where mothers went to court for the maintenance of illegitimate children, they only have the years 1924 to 1964 available so they may be useful to you. Headings of columns:-

Case number
Mother's name
Name of putative father
Appearance or non appearance of defendant
Admits or denies
Date of application
Date of birth of child
Gender
Result of application

Looking around that area there are a number of cinemas marked on maps. There were some theatres in the area at one time but by the mid 1930s they had mostly closed down or been converted into cinemas. The city centre is not far so she may have worked in central Liverpool.

thanks blue,
I did note this from my google searches, it was once obviously a beautiful street, and thriving. I also noted that many of the shops in that area have housing above, so perhaps she rented a room.
In answer to your question re the adoption, there is no fathers name recorded on the birth certificate. The child was adopted the following year.
I will contact the archives you mention and see what other information is available.
thanks again.

I have received information back from the liverpool records office, with regards to the mill road hospital records, and court records, and will senda written application for a search to be done in the next few weeks as time permits.
I also believe that eileen cookson may have had a few other children, so have sent to archives for copies of these certificates, which hopefully might give a few more clues to help locate her.
Will let you know how this goes.

Once again, A plea to anyone out there who might know of her to make contact via this page. We would love to know what happened to her, and anything at all of her life.
