Last tenant of Stitt Street, Liverpool

Post by Keltis »

I'm told that Mary Ellen Kelly was the last tenant of Stitt Street, she was my great grandmother. I also understand that there was a picture of her in Liverpool Echo to mark the closure of Stitt Street and showed her sitting on the steps of the house. I don't know what year/month this was, can anybody help please? Thank you Keltis

Stitt Street might have come down in the early 1970s without an approximate date of when the article was published it's going to be difficult to locate. The Echo staff who work on the historical articles and photos are usually very helpful they provided me with a copy of an article with a photo of my Dad in it. We knew it was around Christmas c1950 and they found it in December 1951. A similar old article about a similar outing had appeared in the Echo and we thought there was another photo published on the same date and asked for a copy. There wasn't but they found it for the same outing but a different year. To give you an idea of where the property was it was in the northern half of Stitt Street which was bisected by William Henry Street:-

What you could do is look at the electoral rolls for Stitt Street in the Liverpool Record Office that will give you an idea of when she was the final tenant. Stitt Street was in Everton Ward. You'll need to make an appointment so they have the years you want to look at ready for you. I've had a quick look through the two books by Ken Rogers about Everton but couldn't spot anything relevant. Stitt Street appears to be still up on a c1970 map that's the reason I think they came down in the 1970s.

Ken Rogers has a website see the link below. Mary E Kelly is at 91 Stitt Street on the 1960 electoral roll on this website:-

Thanks for your two posts Blue. Stitt Street had gone, or at least been cleared of tenants, by 1964. Ill take your advice next week and do the checks.

Hey Blue,
Is there a more complete copy of that wonderful map you’d posted? I’ve been trying to work out house numbers for some of these streets. Thank you
