William Foxley..South Wales Borderers 1916 ?.

Hello... I am hoping someone can lead me in the right direction as to where to find out about my Grandfather William Foxley born 18/04/1893.. he was stationed at Siuggery Camp ( not sure of the spelling sorry) 1916 - 1917... he married my grandmother Mary Edith Smith in November 1917...I don't know what happened to him after that ...I think he was from Crew as before the army he was a railway carriage fitter or maker...I have there marriage certificate....his father was down as deceased on the certificate (he was
also called William Foxley) the marriage took place at The Register Office West Derby....
Am so grateful for any help thank you....

There has been discussion on the Great War Forum about the Sniggery camp, but I think you have to join [no fee] to use their search facility.

There is no evidence of surviving soldiers' records for a soldier of the South Wales Borderers - 2/3 of these records were destroyed in the WW2 blitz.

Two named Private William Foxley crop up in the Medal Index cards, but no dates of birth or personal details are given.

One is 7076, who I am sure must have been a regular soldier, as he was with the 1st Battalion, SWB and earned the 1914 Star, which few later volunteers could earn. He was later in the 2nd Battalion, with number 317076 and later still in the Hampshire Regiment, 56409.

I shall have to break off, but back again soon.

I thought I had a second Borderer, but I was wrong. Is there anything on the marriage certificate about his army status - address, army number etc? Have you any of the three medals he would have earned, if he is the one I found with a 1914 Star? If so they should be impressed with name, rank, regiment and number.
Failing that, all I can think of for the moment is that he did not serve overseas, and so did not receive any awards.

Providing he never broke his contract, he should have finished his apprenticeship on his 21st birthday, April, 1914. Time to join up, be trained up and ready for the Kick Off.

Yes the one in the 1911 census I think is him..there isn't anything on his marriage certificate only Private South Wales Borderers...underneath is written railway carriage??in brackets ...I remember my mother saying he was a railway carriage maker...on my mothers wedding certificate in 1937 it says her father William Foxley was deceased....thank you both of you for your time and help Dagger and Bertieone....

The SWB soldier who was later in the Hampshire Regiment received a Silver War Badge, for which the entitlement was wounding. If he was wounded and spent time away from the SWB battalion he was with while being treated and recovering, he may have been posted to a different regiment when fit. He was discharged in December 1918 because he was no longer fit for service. There is sign of a pension record for him.
Without more details we cannot be sure this is the right man, but he is a definite possible!

There isn't a suitable death registered in England & Wales for a William Foxley born 1893 between the birth and marriage of your mother, 1918-1937.

Your mother may have believed he was deceased or had her own good reasons for declaring so.

The William Foxley on the 39 register, 18/4.93. Crewe, unless just a coincidence, appears to be your grandfather.

Yes this is my grandmothers death I remember that....she lived with her sister Edith Rankin at 7 Rydal st Liverpool 21....and Edith Rankin died in 1965 having moved to 4 Rydal st Liverpool 21....I have both there death certificates...

Well Bertieone I had to do it and have sent for the marriage certificate of William & Ada Martha ...had to find out once and for all..
