Second question first, I couldn't guarantee that the Burial Register will give any different information than the BT's, up to you if you are in the RO it won't take long to do a check.

This might give you an idea what Gibson's Epitaphs is about.

Re: Explanation of Bishop's Transcript needed!
Thanks, Mary - an interesting article.
Final question: I know you have said Bishop's Transcripts are usually a faithful replica of the burial records but won't the original records give me a plot number and indicate whether it is a private grave or is this not always the case?

Re: Explanation of Bishop's Transcript needed!
I really can't answer that without sight of the originals, however being a Church Graveyard there may not be any numbering. I was looking at St Mary's Walton on the Hill to check and individual graves don't seem to be identified there anyway.

Re: Explanation of Bishop's Transcript needed!
Thanks again, Mary.
I'll put it on my list of things to do next time I'm over in Liverpool but I won't hold out much hope then if I do find aything it will be a nice surprise!
I think I was thinking of cemeteries like Anfield.

Re: Explanation of Bishop's Transcript needed!
The entry in the burial book is exactly the same as the BTs, no grave number is given.

Re: Explanation of Bishop's Transcript needed!
Thanks for taking the time to check for me, Mary.
I'm still a bit concerned why he would be described as a 'gentleman' as he was a warehouseman on other records but perhaps he had retired as has been suggested.
There is another death of a 60 year old in Liverpool in 1849 and I think I need to send for this one just in case the I am on the wrong track.
I took a look at the website re: Friends of St Nicholas's. Very interesting - I had visited the church sometime ago and commented on the gardens. The Friends are obviously doing a grand job.

Re: Explanation of Bishop's Transcript needed!
Just to let those of you who have followed-things up for me on this one that I sent away for the only other likely death certificate for William Hughes (i.e. one for the death of a 60 year old in 1849) and details showed I could definitely rule it out.
Hence, the 1850 one issued in Tranmere does refer to my William Hughes and his body was then brought back to Liverpool.
This gives me an approximate d.o.b as 1791 but I obviously need more information to link him with a birth record.
I have a possible line of enquiry to follow and will post a new thread so if any of you have time to spare, please take a look at my John Hughes topic.
Regards,
Glen
