GRO Search facility - possible error

Post by steveflan »

All

I've have come across a possible issue with the GRO search facility. When I searched for a birth in 1888 for Q2 - the results came back for Q1. I tried again, using Q1 in the search, and the results came back as Q2.

I tried again with other names and other years, and the issue appears to still remain (Q2 searches showing Q1 results, and vice versa).

I've let the GRO know, but just wanted to let you all know in case anyone was 'missing' any births.

All

Apologies for potentially mis-leading you all as it appears I'very got mixed up reading the quarters as J and M in the results!!

It looks like I was reading J as January when it's really June.

Doesn'the help when you're looking for a birth in May!!!!

Might have been more clearer if they use numbers (1, 2, 3 and 4) instead of letters (M, J, S and D)

Agreed. I don't like seeing quarters given by the first or last month in the quarter as they can be misleading. They can be confusing, they can also be misunderstood by beginners or non-researchers as meaning month of birth, marriage or death. I prefer to use or see Jan/Feb/Mar or Q1.

  but it could have been an error and you were right to bring it to their attention and then thanks for straightening us out.

Think it would be best if this post was moved to the Off Topic so as not to lead us astray

Too late to worry about leading some of us astray! :?

I, too, find the 'J' quarter thing quite confusing when doing the new index search, and have to double-check to make sure I've got it right.

I have also noticed errors in the mother's maiden names, I wonder who has transcribed these. Have sent in a couple of errors.
