Help with transcription

Post by JohnnyO »

Hi all, I'm trying to decipher some writing from the clip below. Edward Hockley Bullen's mother was Georgi Ann Furnivall. I can see Jennie Furnivall as the name of the person to be informed in the event of a casualty, and know the address is Petrolia, Ontario.

I'm trying to figure out the text on the right hand side above 'relationship.

Any help appreciated :-)

Thanks John

Hi Blue, thanks. What was confusing me is the address of Jennie Furnivall which is given as Primrose Hill Road. Ah, just seen a 1921 Canada census. It reads Georgia Bullen widowed living at 15 Warren Avenue Petrolia Ontario Canada. Now it makes sense. Apart from why the aunt was to be informed rather than the mother, and I don't have the aunt in my tree yet and struggling to link her :?

I read it and worked out the same words ... then looked to see all had already beaten me to it! which is good that we all concur.

Perhaps the mother wasn't in too good health and maybe living with aunt to be cared for?

Thanks to everyone as ever for the help. At least i have the wording now.

Bert, thanks for the information. For some reason I don't have Jenny/ Helen Jane Emily in my tree. I just checked with GRO and it has her born 2nd quarter 1861. My tree has her mother, Jane Clementina Marsh dying in April 1861, maybe at childbirth. Her father remarried a Frances Elizabeth Thorp in September 1867.

I'm having trouble finding a GRO for Georgi Ann Grace Furnivall. My tree has a record from the England & Wales Civil Registration Birth Index showing her being born in Clerkenwell in Q4 1858 1b 516 but I can't find that on GRO. I also can't see her on an 1861 census anywhere?

Thanks again both. I did look at similar spellings of the surname and put marsh in for the mother, but got no results.

I have a fair bit of info about the Bullens; thanks Bert, and have that marriage in my tree. My wife is named after one of their children, Helen Dorothy Bullen, her great aunt who also ended up in Canada, as did a lot of the family. I have been sent a newspaper clipping by one of my wife's Canadian relatives (still there, and we are hoping to visit in the summer, as they are very keen on the family tree and have lots of documents for me to wade through) which relates to an English actress, Phyllis Bullen, who was playing the part of Anne Boleyn, and describes her as a collateral descendant of the English queen she is to portray. It goes on to say that Miss Bullen is descended in a direct line from Sir William Boleyn, who was an ancestor of Admiral Lord Nelson. Her great grand uncle (the actress, not the wife!) was Admiral Sir Charles Bullen, Knight Grand Cross of the Order of The Bath. He commanded the battleship Britannia at Trafalgar. Her father was Percy Bullen, New York representative of the Daily Telegraph. Fascinating stuff. I don't have Phyllis Bullen in my tree yet. There are a couple mentioned in a Canadian census of 1921 on Ancestry, but I don't have worldwide access, so will have to wait for a trip to Crosby library to investigate further. My wife's Canadian relative reckons that she remembers a Phyllis Bullen in the family and was born in the early 1900's, we think in Canada. It seems from immigration records that the Bullens moved to the USA in 1903 and then on to Canada in 1905 according to the 1921 Canada census.

John,

If you find Jennie Furnivall in 1911, she was living with a family of actors, such as,

Thanks Bert, working as a housekeeper. Trying to find her also in the 1891 and 1901 entries. I have found the probate for Jennie Furnivall from 1947, to John Sydenham 'Furnwall' (Furnivall) who again is not in my tree. He was born in Essex in 1878 to a mother, Eager. He lived and married in India. I don't have his mother in the tree yet either. When he died in 1960, his probate went to Marjorie Sydenham Ady, single woman, again, not in my tree but must be related.

John Sydenham Furnivall, bn 1868 was the son of Charles Henry Furnivall, bn 1842, he was the son of William Henry Furnivall, married Jane Isabella Terry, 1839, St George, Hanover Sq.

Jane Isabella Terry will be the connection to the Actors, Jennie was living with in 1911.

William Henry Furnivall, father of William Graham Furnivall to a previous marriage.

Thanks so much Bert. I have William Henry Furnivall in my tree as father to William Graham, but have at the moment him as the only son. I have now added the others and will go from there. I have about a 100 Ancestry hints now. There is a copy marriage certificate of William Henry Furnivall marryingJane Isabella Terry in July 1839 with parents being John Furnivall and Charles David Wilkins Terry.

I'm quite keen on exploring the Furnivall and Bullen line to see where it goes back to.
