Former name for a widow?

Post by daggers »

St Mary the Virgin church Prescot, marriage register for 22 July 1854 has an entry for Robert Morris, widower and Elsie Mary Murphy, widow.
Lancashire OPC has the bride's father's name as 'Arthur Forbes?' and the image for the entry of the father's surname via Ancestry is not clear.
Census returns show Elsie as born in Fordyce, Banffshire, and her year of birth varies between 1819 and 1822.
Can any of our resident experts help to trace Elsie's maiden surname please?

Daggers,

If Alexander Horatio and Adelaide Mary belong to the marriage, maiden name, McQueen, GRO,

Doesn't look like McQueen on the marriage cert though.

It does look like Arthur Forbes, there's nothing on Scots People, trying many variations for names, births etc. Nothing would tempt me to throw credits at anything.

So far I would agree that it's unclear enough that I wouldn't be spending dosh on such an uncertainty, however if you come across something good enough I have a few credits to spare, let me know.

Bert
The name McQueen fits well, as the couple had a daughter given the names Lilian McQueen, and another child appeared in a census as a visitor to an aunt named McQueen, in Edinburgh.
I agree that the name in the register does not fit.
Well done, finding the GRO link!
I'll use a few SP credits later to see if I can find more.
Many thanks

I was interrupted by phone before sending this, but thanks for the offer, Mary. I have a bit in hand with SP, so will see where I get to.

Later: I have just found a press report of the marriage; Elsie was the widow of John D. Murphy, of 'Arica, South America'. More to explore. D

Scotlands People has the following entry in the Will & Testaments:

Surname: McQueen
Forename: Margaret Mrs.
Date: 7/5/1873
Description: alias McLean Residing in Portsoy Widow of Arthur Forbes McQueen Excise Officer
Court: Banff Sheriff Court
Reference Number: SC2/40/26

I've not used the new ScotlandsPeople before and I'm very impressed! You can now see the list of search results without having to pay 1 credit!

Late start here, so thanks all round for all you have been doing. The jigsaw puzzle is coming together. All these unusual names help to single out the individuals which is great, with surname Morris in mind.
