Could well be right, occupations change but the birthplaces in 1891 would suggest that this is right.

Looking at Joseph's work history, his occupations are varied.

1881, Toolmaker,
1889, Carter & Butcher
1891, Bricklayers Labourer,
1901, Coal miner.

He probably had many more occupations between form filling.

Thanks bert and mary, :)

I appreciate that information.

I have located the birth and baptism for Edith williams, it looks as though her father just disappeared. I cannot find any sign of spenser williams (the mariner), her father.
I thought he may have been born Lancashire, but cannot find any listing at all for a spenser williams, nor his marriage to mary.
At this point I am wondering if spenser was his mothers maiden name, and is therefore his second name not his first name.
I appreciate if you are able to help with any information regarding spenser williams.

There isn't a death registered for Spencer Williams between 1868 and April 1871 when Mary declares herself a widow, with being a Mariner he was possibly lost at sea.

thank you both,
i had the opportunity to have a bit more of a look at some of the census records for uk. I agree, there doesn't seem to be a death record, nor can I find a marriage record. I have also searched mariners certificates. to no avail.

That has gotten me to thinking, did he just sail away and never come home.
Perhaps spenser is not his christian name.

I took a punt and wondered if the name spenser may be that of his mother. so searched for williams and spenser marriages. I located a marriage in wales 1832, for a Watkin williams (a mariner) and mary spenser.

Looks promising so will look at this some more when I can.

Coincidentally, my grt aunt in australia, married edward williams (a mariner from wales) who's parents were listed on their marrriage as watkin williams and mary frances williams.

I find this rather uncanny. Will look into this some more, as I could never find edward's birth, and wondered if it was just fictitous.

kind regards,

sharene

What am I missing?

Edith Williams baptised 1865, parents, Spencer Williams, Mary Williams.

The only marriage between 1850-1870, involving a Spencer Williams was to Mary Ottaway, Liverpool 1863

Edith Williams 1864 birth has a mothers maiden name, Ottaway.

Marriage, Spencer Williams father, Thomas Williams, occupation, Tailor, Mary Ottaway father, Thomas Ottaway, Mariner.

Yappie,
thank you. You must have more record access than I can get from oz.
I couldn't even find a seamans certificate for an s. williams.
This would fit in with her being "a widow" on the later sensus.
love your work, yappie.

Thanks for the PM, Sharene, and your kind words.

I don't think that can be the correct death for Spencer, he and Mary had a second child, Mary Jane Williams, bn 1869.

Don't know so much, a great aunt had children up to 1917 with her husband ..... but he died in 1911.

Mary may have been "adopted" or perhaps she was conceived with someone else. Would be registered by the mother any way.

the 1841 wales census that shows spenser williams (7mths) as child of thomas and mary, is correct, but the other children listed were born to his first wife jane martin.

So I am still wondering if spenser had another christian name. ie. william or richard, or edward for instance.

He was registered Spencer and throughout his life used no other name, something to be grateful for when searching a surname, Williams.

Well done , Sharene,

It seems the children born prior to Spencer were with Jane Martin, parents, Edward & Elinor Martin.

If Thomas married Mary, she may not have been a Spencer, if previously married.
