Compass and Anchor James Wilson & Mary Close
Mary Close was the licensee of the Compass and Anchor (sometimes recorded as Anchor and Compass) in Stand St when she married James in January 1875. Can anyone help me to find when she took over the license and when she or James passed on the license to the next occupant.
Peter.

If the Compass and Anchor was 19 Strand Street, The license transfer from Thomas Spencer to Thomas Graham, June, 1878, may help narrow it down. No mention of James or Mary that I could see.

The 1871 Commercial Directory list her at the Compass & Anchor, 1, Canning Place, 35 Strand Street

1881 Gore's lists Wm Griffiths at the Compass & Anchor, 1 Canning Place

Transfer of Licenses, Liverpool Mercury, June, 1868.

I suspect a typo by the paper,
RT, "1867 Gore's lists Thomas Close, victualler, 35 Strand Street"
Liverpool Mercury, March, 1866.
License Transfer, Canning Place, Hugh Owen to Thomas Close.

Bert & retiringtype - thanks for filling in more of the gaps: much appreciated. Please may I add a supplementary question. I have been given a decorated china cup. The inscription reads 'presented to Mary Wilson of Liverpool 1886'. Is it possible to find where she was in '86 so we can guess at what it might have been for?

This is the nearest directory I have to that date - 1900, take your pick of the Mary Wilsons.

MaryA - Thanks for your note. Mary died in 1891 so the directory is too late for this enquiry. Can you tell me please how frequently these directories were published? Would the Liverpool library have a full set and do you perchance know the years when they started and finished? - Peter.

Re: Compass and Anchor James Wilson & Mary Close
Just looking at that first one on the 1900 list - Miss Margaret K Wilson, house name "Torris Holme". Mary Close/Wilson (nee Woodhouse) was born at "Torris holm" per the 1881 census (24 Byrom Street) and 1891 census (51 Scotland Road). Probably just a coincidence.

Every year! Began at least 1766 and up to at least 20th Century but not sure of exact year. Dear retiringtype, The house name is surely a coincidence. However I do not normally believe in this sort of coincidence and will, when time permits, have another look at it.
