16 November 1935 St Cuthbert, Everton
Thomas Stanley Wade, 30, Bachelor, Baker of 14 Bagnall Street
Father Thomas Wade (Deceased) Baker
Dora May Smith, 26, Spinster, 83 Wye Street
Father Clifford Smith, Undertakers Agent
Both signed their names
Witnesses Robert H? Smith and Esther F Wade
Hi Mary, many thanks for looking this up, I never did get a chance to get to the library with work commitments. The Wade side is correct, as Esther is Thomas Stanley Wade's sister, and the father Thomas Smith was a baker and died in 1929. My wife does not remember her grandfather being an undertaker's agent. Another blow is the witness Robert Smith, as there is no one in the family with that name :(

Hi Mary, this is definitely not my Clifford Smith; George Clifford Smith, my wife's grandfather, was born in 1907 and married Mary Yates. In 1939 they were living at 42, Arlescourt Road, Liverpool. He was a Detective Constable in Liverpool police.

Many thanks for investigating.

Hi Bert, thanks for the information, but as posted in a reply to Mary, the family were in Arlescourt Road in Liverpool, not Birkenhead.

Hi Bert, wrong Smith again I think :( . He was Clifford Walter Smith (I did originally say he was Clifford George, confusing him with his son George Clifford but amended it in a later post). There are far too many George Clifford and Clifford George Smiths for my liking :? My Clifford Smith was a dock labourer in the 1911 census.

I think it is back to the drawing board with Dora May Smith and her descendants, and another look at the male Smith line.

Appreciate all of your help as ever,

John

John,

I see no reason why a Dock Labourer in 1911 couldn't work for an Undertaker 24 years later in 1935, the main difference of course is, working for an Undertaker he wouldn't want to take the cargo home.

I suspect it was John Southern, 1938 Directory, and fiddling about with the 39 married Hannah Jennions in 1915, any bells ringing as far as relatives?

Hi Bert, you are quite correct. There are John, Hannah, Frank, Minnie and Sidney living there. Looking for a Dora may Smith but no joy yet.

I think it is time to order a copy birth certificate from GRO to get some more details about Dora May....

It will answer some questions,

Just wondering, on George Clifford's birth cert, is it, Alice Smith formally Groves or Alice Maud Smith formally Groves?

Hi Bert, I've attached the certificate. 1911 census has Alice Maud Smith born Poplar aged 26. The parents never married even though the census says.

Just looking at the marriage certificate of George Clifford Smith and Mary Yates in 1927, he then lived in Benedict Street in Bootle. Father shown as Clifford Smith, occupation labourer.

Thanks, John

Thanks John,
We'll see what's on Dora May's birth cert, we can't rule out an Alice left the scene and an Alice Maud entered it.

Thanks Bert, certificate ordered. I had a look at outgoing passenger records for Dora May, in case her mum took her with her to Australia after she left Clifford Smith. No joy as yet. Fingers crossed the birth cert will shed some light on things :?

The DOB will hopefully tally with Mrs Wade's in 1939 and you can welcome an undertaker in to the family :)
