Ancestry DNA testing

Hi all, has anyone recently taken the Ancestry DNA kit to test their DNA? I notice they are doing an offer at the moment for £79. I believe they have changed the algorithm used, which has caused thousands of people to lose their ancestors .

I'm tempted to give it a go.

Any thoughts?

From what I've read it's a lot more popular in the USA than it is in the UK, and a lot cheaper I believe too, so it's a no vote from me, unless the price comes right down to about 10 quid I'd do it then for the novelty factor.

Thanks for the replies, some interesting reading. Anyway, after a couple of glasses of vino tinto I bit the bullet and ordered a kit, which arrived yesterday. Now I have one, my wife wants one too

Well Ancestry DNA results are in, after a long wait. Have to say that I am rather underwhelmed by the results . Nearest match to my Ancestry tree is a 3rd cousin, who I already know about and have been in touch with previously. That is an 'extremely high' match, the rest are all 4-8th cousins.

Only surprise was the fact that my ethnicity is 82% Irish, 13% British, 2% Scandinavian and a couple of other small trace regions, East Europe, India and native American Indian. What the heck! Expected a bigger swing to British and a bit more Scandinavian. Paternal grandfather was from Armagh and maternal great grandmother from Dundalk.

As my own direct line is fairly narrow, it will be 3rd - 8th cousins that I would be interested in, hopefully to give clues to take research further backwards or to connections I hadn't been aware of.

It will be up to us to spread the data to as many places as can be connected to other researchers, one place is MyHeritage.com who are currently accepting DNA data from other sites to their own, perhaps this will help make more matches?

Thanks Mary. I have to go through 177 pages of 'good' matches. I have uploaded my tree already to MyHeritage.com, and have now uploaded my DNA as well. Time will tell

Female DNA is not as useful as Male DNA. It is called mitochondrial dna and only goes down the female line. Or I believe that is what I read in an article. Unfortunately my only male sibling has died recently.
