Trello - online todo lists

Post by steveflan »

Thought this might be of interest but a number of us in my workplace have begun using Trello to manage our individual todo lists.

It is free to sign up, and there is an app in which you can link to your lists. So if you use it and go researching in the library you can have your list on your phone or tablet and update your cards immediately - save writing copious amounts of additional notes.

You can have as many boards as you want (I have one for work, one for home and one for my family tree). In each board you can have as many lists as you want. So in my work board I have things such as 'Today' for things to do today obviously, 'This Week' for things that are due sometime later in the week, An 'Overview' list to note things like personal objectives, and so on.

Each list can have any number of cards attached to it. Each card is a bit like a virtual index card, but can be much more than just a note. You can drill into the card and add things such as attachments, pictures, checklists (a very handy feature) and even due dates - which are highlighted as the date itself creeps ever closer.

Cards can be moved about within lists, so you can have your most important cards at the top of your list. Alternatively, you can move cards from one list to another (for example, in work I have a 'Completed' list and when a task is done I move it from, usually, my 'Today' list to my 'Completed' list).

The possibilities are almost endless.

Just simply go to https://trello.com/home and you can sign up (or even use your Google account if you have one), but you might want to have a look at the user guide (https://trello.com/guide) first.

Alternatively you might want to have a look at some genealogical examples to begin with.

This link doesn't go into Trello too much but does give you a flavour of what you can do with their Example Genealogy Board (http://familyhistorydaily.com/genealogy ... genealogy/)

Again this one is quite brief but you will see an example in the use of checklists (https://itsallrelativenz.wordpress.com/ ... genealogy/)

This final one is a bit more in depth (http://www.ancestrypaths.com/tips-and-t ... ng-trello/)

This sounds interesting, thanks Steve, as I have an ongoing list for Record Office look ups, which is obviously constantly being updated.
