James Ross, Chelsea Pensioner.

The only sighting of him apart from Baptisms and Birth cert are on the 1851 census,

HO107 P2186 F167 P6,



LDS have a Chelsea Pension record for a James Ross, Born 1802, Leitrim. Can any kind soul find further information please, elsewhere?

Information from Birth Certs, wife's maiden name, Jane Lyne.
James was a pensioner from the 49th regiment.

Probably married in Ireland, 2 sons born there. The children born in Liverpool and one other born after the above census are well catered for.

Help with the Irish side of things, gratefully received.

What religion were the children brought up?

Checking the available RC records online most don't go anywhere near the dates we are interested in, and just to confirm that I haven't found a James Ross with wife Jane in the RC marriages.

Blue, I have seen the image before, with it being 1824, I wondered if there was a transfer involved to the 49th, as recorded on his daughters birth cert, 1849. I was hoping any pension records would have mention of the last regiment he served with.

The marriage is also on Anc with no further details. It has crossed my mind that a transcription error may be involved. The problem is where, marriage record or birth cert I have. I might have to order another one of the children's birth certificate to confirm mother's maiden name.

The discharge papers for the man from Carragallen show that he served only with 99th Foot. He was discharged in May 1840 in Dublin.

The regiments whereabouts suggest that James couldn't have joined up until after 1814 when they returned to England. Did the regiment recruit in Ireland, probably, or was James in England and returned to Ireland to marry and start a family?

It is conceivable that the registrar has mistranscribed "99th" as "49th" when recording that birth.

I hope ordering the birth cert of daughter Ellen will help with that and also confirm the maiden name of the mother.


Can I ask if there was any mention of rank for the Gentleman discharged in Dublin, 1840.
Daughter, Jane Elizabeth, at her marriage in 1867 declares her Father James, Sergeant in the Army.

He was a Private throughout.

There is an army record for a James Ross of the 49th Regiment who originally attested for the 46th in 1811, declaring his age as 16. He had been a Sergeant.
Born Shandon, Cork. Discharged January 1839, intending to reside and receive his pension in Cork city.

Very interesting, only a few years out with his age on the 51 census and with Jane being much younger, he could have knocked a few years off. Also the right area for the marriage of James Ross/Jane Lyle 1839, License Bonds for Diocese of Cork and Ross. With luck, Ellen's Birth Cert may reveal something of interest

Haven't pursued George very much, other than his baptism and him being with his mother 61/71.

The Church of Ireland may have the marriage record a lot of registers were destroyed in 1922 but a lot are available via the Anglican library:-

There are some surviving marriage records listed in that C of I pdf for Cork City so the marriage could exist. You could be lucky as if he married at St Anne's Shandon located on the north side of the Lee that parish is mentioned in the pdf under Shandon. Lovely place Cork City I visited a couple of years ago.
