Fishermen of North Shore

Hi All,
I am researching two RC families in Liverpool in the 18th century. I have:-

The MORALLY family
Henry MORLEY (1726-1768) wife Mary WEEDON (b 1741) - Fisherman of North Shore
father Robert MORLEY

The WEEDON family
Mary WEEDON (wife of above) father Roger WEDON who was also a fisherman of North Shore

Both these families are listed in the "Returns of Papists of 1767" as having been at North Shore for only 3 years.

I also have a later problem with the MORLEY's . Henry MORLEY (b 1769) the son of above Henry is shown as the father of my ancestor, Margaret MORLEY (b 1785-1851). On Margaret's bapt certificate her mother is given as Ellis MORLEY. Henry is given on Ancestry as marrying both Alice TRISTAM and Alice JARRET on the same day !!!!

Any help would be useful

Perhaps she was a widow and therefore had 2 surnames Just a thought.

The residence of 3 years means they were living somewhere else 3 years ago the records don't give any more information it's possible they could have lived previously at North Shore in the past.

What is the year of the marriage? Are you looking at someone's tree on Ancestry? Are you looking at a tree that has confused two different marriages giving two separate record sources for the 1814 marriage? Is it called "Mark's Family Tree"? If so check the sources on the tree they are two different marriages:-

Marriage: 25 Oct 1784 St John, Preston, Lancashire, England
Henry Morrowley - of this parish
Alice Jarrard - of this parish
Witness: Wm. Weardon; Wm. Hodgkinson
Married by Banns by: H. Shuttleworth - Vicar
Notes: [groom signed his surname Morley]

One marriage was 30 years after the other, it's likely the first marriage produced Margaret. I haven't checked if he married again.

Preston's quite a distance away why would he marry there? The Henry you mentioned would have been aged around 16 years in 1785. I'm struggling to find other RC baptisms for other children perhaps the parents didn't marry?

What or where is this North Shore? The only North Shore I know is in Sydney Australia!!

To the north of the Pier Head there used to be a shore. It was later used for docks.

North Shore was in Liverpool not Kirkdale or Bootle as per the 1767 'Returns of Papists' the people living there are recorded in Liverpool. Kirkdale and Bootle are recorded separately within Walton. To give you an idea about this location there was a windmill at North Shore 'near to the junction of Waterloo Road and Regent Street' and North Shore was said to be where the Clarence Dock is now located.

Also located there... 'Vandries House was a celebrated coffee house on the North Shore of Liverpool - a site renowned for its Georgian & Regency sea bathing. It struck an unusual sight in that it was painted white and had a tall, slender building that book-ended one side of the group - making it a natural visual aid and reference point for visitors. It faced the Mersey and was situated between Vulcan St. & Vandries St.'

Not questioning Blue's knowledge or evidence he's provided, what was North Shore, Kirkdale or Bootle. Was it a continuation of the North Shore on the map Blue put up, or a postal district? if I can call it that.
Search, British Library Newspaper, North Shore, Kirkdale gives 12 hits, North Shore, Bootle, 10 hits, Liverpool Mercury.

What's the earliest reference you can find for North Shore Kirkdale? The earliest I could find was in the 1832 Poll Book I found two entries for people in North Shore Liverpool (a shipwright and a merchant) and one entry (a farmer) in North Shore Kirkdale. In the 1767 census of RCs North Shore Liverpool is recorded after New Quay. There were 57 Roman Catholics living at North Shore Liverpool. In the whole township of Kirkdale there were 16 Roman Catholics there is no mention of North Shore Kirkdale or any separation of Kirkdale into districts. I would think the coast around Kirkdale in 1767 would have been sparsely populated as towards the area of Sandhills it was described in 'Bygone Liverpool' as a 'wilderness of sandhills'. There was also a South Shore recorded in the 1767 census hence the need for the appellation North. The term North Shore could be applied to any part of the coast north of Liverpool but in this case the area it refers to is the area shown in the 1810 map.
