Buried in Hale not Woolton

Post by BarbaraW »

Good afternoon, I've found my 3 x great-grandparents John and Hannah (nee Quick) BANKS both of Woolton, but buried at St Mary's in Hale she in 1867 and he in 1876.

Why haven't they been buried at St Peter's in Woolton?

Are there any M.I.'s for Hale from 1867 onwards?

Would it be possible to find a graveyard plot and find their burial place or places?

TIA

The shop has the Parish Registers for BMD's but I have no idea about MI's, sorry not mentioned on Gibsons. I can check the indexes at the RO tomorrow and see.

As for why - I was surprised when I came across some of my ancestors in Childwall All Saints when I expected them to be in St Mary's Walton on the Hill, but more delving produced his parents buried there, which then led to me finding his baptism there too. So your family may have more links to Hale than you thought.

That would be great Mary if you could check with the RO if M.I.'s even exist for this church.

The only thing I know for sure about Hale is that the Childe of Hale is buried in the same churchyard because I've just been reading up on him! It's not an area I'm familiar with but just doing some research it would explain why John and his family (with son Isaac the elusive Banks) were living in Ditton in the 1871 census as I hadn't realised it was so near to the Widnes area.

I hadn't thought of the parents being from Hale so one more thing to look at, thanks again Mary :)

You know one of my favourite solutions is to phone the church itself and ask, although I will check at the RO anyway.

According to their website, they are in the process of cataloguing the graves. There are some already online.

Thank you very much for that Karen, it's one to keep my eye on as I've downloaded the files but they are all fairly "new" and look like burials still take place there. I was going to phone the church today as per Mary's idea. :)

Hi Everyone,
I’ve family buried at St Mary’s Hale. If I’m not mistaken the original registers were destroyed by fire in the 1970s. When I researched my family at Hale I used the Bishops Transcripts held on microfilm at Huyton Library. The earlier ones are in poor condition. Hope this is of some help.

Thanks Dave, always good to know some insider information about what's happened to registers.

Just to say that I was unable to find any note of MI's or plan at the RO, so hopefully yours may turn up in the catalogue some time.
