Delf Lane, Childwall
Delf Lane, Childwall
In the 1841 census John and Hannah Banks are living at the above address, the only one I can find on a modern google map is a Delf Lane off Speke Hall Road or am I in completely the wrong area? TIA

Re: Delf Lane, Childwall
Have you checked the Enumerator's Walk to see if you can match that up?

Re: Delf Lane, Childwall
Although this map is much later, 1885-1900, I think it would show that the Delf Lane in Speke wouldn't be the one, although the name is not an uncommon one in most areas.

Re: Delf Lane, Childwall
The numbers of people on the census there in 1841 doesn't match the Speke location. I wonder if the address is wrong or an old name that's now out of use? It seems more likely to be a part of Woolton than Speke.

Thanks for that map Blue, much better for date, however, I don't believe the Delf Lane in Speke is the one. Although I can't see another, reading the enumerator's walk I think the Quarry Lane mentioned is further north, just west of St Peter's Church.

Agreed see above further replies. Brian AKA Wooltonian says on the link that Quarry Street in Woolton was previously called Delph Lane.

Re: Delf Lane, Childwall
Thank you very Blue, so my much travelled family:
1841
Delf Lane, Childwall
1851
14 Rose Street, Woolton
1861
30 Folly Vale, Woolton
1871
Three Ash Lane (Brook House), Ditton
Interesting I've come across the name Quarry Street many times so thanks for that Blue, isn't that the Quarry where The Beatles got their original name from, The Quarrymen?
Brian Seddon is actually a Facebook friend of mine though we don't actually chat these days
, we "met" up many moons ago on the now defunct Scousers Mailing List set up by Liverpool University for ex pats and locals of Liverpool in the infancy of home computers. Dave Wood was another on there, he still has his Liverpool photography sites online and we all shared that same love of our home town, you can take the Scouser out of Liverpool but you can never take Liverpool out of the Scouser

Re: Delf Lane, Childwall
Hi Barbara
The 1841 Census entry is for Much Woolton now known as Woolton not Childwall. On a parish level it used to be Childwall but the census record is for the township of Much Woolton.

I am just going by what the transcriptions say and FMP has the same, are you saying they are both wrong?

I don't have FMP to see their transcript have a look at the top of the page of the original record below:-

Re: Delf Lane, Childwall
It's the same on FMP but this is how they transcribe the Census Details:
Street Delf Lane
Parish or township Childwall
City or borough -
Town Much Woolton
County Lancashire
Country England
Registration district Prescot
So then the address is transcribed as:
Delf Lane, Childwall, Prescot, Lancashire, England
Street Delf Lane
Parish or township Childwall
City or borough -
Town Much Woolton
County Lancashire
Country England
Registration district Prescot
So then the address is transcribed as:
Delf Lane, Childwall, Prescot, Lancashire, England

Re: Delf Lane, Childwall
Don't forget that the transcribers of most of the censuses aren't even in this country, sometimes I wonder where they pick up the information they declare, many discussions on this point in the past - ie Liverpool Ohio, or Bolivia to name a couple. So you do right to question these points and hopefully local people, or those such as Blue with a good knowledge of maps, will help.
Dave Woods photographs are still prominent in our Journals. In fact we met him about a year ago when manning a table at Christ Church in Waterloo and he took our photograph which was featured the following edition.

Re: Delf Lane, Childwall
I'm not sure when Delf Lane, Woolton disappeared, but Quarry Street and Delf Lane, Woolton are both mentioned in the Newspapers, 1876, for various reasons. A newspaper article mentions a Marl Pit in Delf Lane, 1866. Apparently the children's playground, Recreation Ground on old map, Quarry Street, was built on the Marl Pit, this would suggest Delf Lane being that part of Quarry Street.

Re: Delf Lane, Childwall
I have a private tree on Anc linked to my tree on Family Tree Maker. So you are all saying when I pull censuses across I should overwrite Childwall and make it whatever it says at the top of the census sheet, ie Much Woolton? Thereby disregarding the civil parish (Childwall) but instead using the sub-registration district (Much Woolton) as Anc calls it.

Re: Delf Lane, Childwall
I think when it comes to places I would only enter amendments for the larger problems as the Districts and Sub Districts might be connected to Ecclesiastical districts etc. and might assist other people. I usually only bother for names and very badly hand-written birthplaces (obviously on the later ones, rather than 1841).
And bear in mind I'm not local enough to Woolton to be sure on boundaries to take my word for it.
