Looking for Scott Family near Liverpool 1827

David Scott, born Dec 27 1827, near LP. Third child in family of 14 kids 4 boys, 10 girls. Father was born there as well as his father. Was Yeoman. Mother: Scottish from one of the best families in Edinburgh. David came to US in 1840s (by himself?). Brother Alexander , sea master, fell heir to the Scott estate. All from documented History of Early Settlers in Kankakee Co, IL.

All of this may be made up (by David), don't know. I have all history after he got to US, but no mother, father names. No history of bros and sisters. Any help appreciated. Thank you.

We would need you to clarify a few points.

Where have you got the exact date from? we usually get baptisms at that date as it is before the beginning of Civil Registration.
What do you mean by "near LP". If the birth took place near Liverpool then where? any clues as to an area?

Third child in family of 14 kids 4 boys, 10 girls.

What are the names of the other children? if he was third child then some may have been born after 1837 when Civil Registration began and they may be found on the 1841 census.

Mother: Scottish from one of the best families in Edinburgh.

What was the mother's name? Do you have any idea of the place of marriage?

One source for his info is the obit. Lists father as John Scott, mother as James McNeil. Again, seems unreliable.

Death cert. says he was born in Leeds. Kanakee biography says "near Liverpool".

Birth date is from Kanakee biography. (12-27-1827) Death cert. says bd is 12-26-1826, again discrepancy.

I think I need a paid researcher there. thanks for helping.

Liverpool might have been one of the ports he sailed from but it seems to me the above points to Scotland (names like David, Alexander the master seaman and the mention of Edinburgh) the occupation yeoman would indicate a farming background so unlikely to be from a town more likely a rural location. There are farmers and masters and mates seamen certificates for men of these names from Angus (formerly Forfarshire), Scotland unfortunately these are common names and this is only one of many possible families. We can't give the time necessary to research this thoroughly enough to say this is the right family but it is an interesting possibility.

David was already in US in 1840s and married in Vermont in 1849 to Clarissa Terrell. I believe he was a teen at the time of the sailing, as he went to school for one year in Philadelphia upon arrival. I have extensive info about this part of his life, but nothing about his early years in England/Scotland. Thanks.

The difference between Leeds and Liverpool is huge in English terms, it may not seem so in miles in US terms but is actually a few counties away.

Could Leeds really mean Leith near Edinburgh?

If we had the names of the many brothers and sisters then we might be able to narrow down families in the records.

I can't find a convincing match using the available information. No luck finding an English Scott with a Scottish born wife in the 1841 Census with the possible first names. It's possible the parents may have died before 1841.

Hello all you helpful people !

If David was born in 1827 and was the third child of 14, at what age would the parents probably have stopped procreating. After 1827, there were 11 more kids. Would you expect one every 2 years or so? That would be around 1849, so shouldn't they appear on the 1840 and 1850 census as a compete family with young children? Or am I not thinking correctly??

Generally speaking yes, approximately every two years. If you have a subs to a site where you can check the censuses, it would be as well to do the exercise for both Liverpool, Lancashire and Leeds, Yorkshire.

Presumably he must have kept in touch with the family to know about the younger children if he had already left before the family was complete.

The two main ones are Ancestry.com or Findmypast.com Ancestry has more records for Liverpool than any other site, however, don't just jump in and get a subs, if you go to the site there should be an offer for a two week free trial which could do you just as well for now.

There are lots of near matches but not enough there to be a match such as this one. A David Scott born c1829 in England with a Scottish mother it doesn't say on Family Search but on the image on Ancestry it says the mother is a farmer. Only a small family though and no sign of an Alexander and we don't know if the father was English or Scottish:-
