Morning All,
Again many thanks for the responses.
Originally I had the son James of this family confused with that of another James, mostly on the basis of the flowery names.
James F Martindale (born Liverpool 24/5/1844), wife Rosalind, Children Beatrice, Amy E (born Maghull 1872), Frederick Percy & Gertraude. Moved to Cheshire by 1891.
The "Charlotte Amanda", "Janet Christina" and "Charles Alexander" seemed out of step with the single forenames of the other children. Mind you, if her (Jane/t) husband left £2000 then he/they was fairley well off.
It remains to be seen if there is anything behind the double forenames of James/Janes children other than the fashion of the times. I think thats all it is. I also think Leando is just a corruption of Amanda as Jane/t couldn't write and probably had a scots accent. I have seen cases were the surname Martindale has been spelt differently by the same vicar for each of the children of a family (the worst being Martnul).
On a more general note it is looking like the great majority the Martindales in Liverpool mid 19th C all come from the same family grouping. I am a ex Liverpool Martindale but my branch came down from Kendal way in the 1880s. I suspect this group of martindales comes from a group in Prescot/StHelens who in turn date back to Elizabethan times.

Where do the Martindale coal dealers come from? It's the first thing I associate with your name and Liverpool.

Povall Cheshire/Liverpool, Williams/Owens Caernarvon, Brown Liverpool/Cumberland/Ireland, Pritchard Liverpool, Atherton Liverpool, Banks Liverpool, Kelly IOM, Grimes/Botworth/Smith Wirral, Rice Manchester/Ireland, Lockley Manchester, Bowler Manchester.

Hi Barbara.
Coincidentally the youngest son of the family in the heading, Charles Alexander, was a coal dealer in the 1881 census.. I am still looking at the more recent families to figure out who is who. Round where I live (Chorley), the Martindales are known for the local double glazing company. There seems to have been a regular too-ing and fro-ing of Martindales between the Lake District and Liverpool. Presumably for work. Other than odd ones scattered around, the core of Martindales in Lancashire is around Prescot and St Helens. They started off as masons/slaters but later there are many in the coal mining industry. The Martindales Coal Business in Liverpool (I had heard of it) may have come from Wigan. I will advise when I find out. For some reason I don't really understand, the Martindales from Westmorland/Cumberland historically moved down the east side of the Pennines down through Durham, York, Lincoln down to London and hardly came south to Lancashire. This may have been due to the extensive "Mosses" in Lancashire before they were drained in the 16th & 17th centurys. It would be interesting to know if other Lakeland families did a similar thing. I also found out that the distribution of Martindales (not a common name generally) was influenced heavily by the English Civil War. Concentrated in groups before, scattered everywhere afterwards. That presumably also applies to all other English family names.
regards Billm

If it's of any help the Martindales of coal fame began their company in 1884, may have started in Crown Street, or possibly moved there at sometime, but at least spent some of it's time there until it was demolished, when they moved to Rose Place, St Anne Street. If driving along Great Homer Street you can still see the orange M on the white wall even though they have been gone about 15 years now.
The family mainly now live on the Wirral (Hoylake and West Kirby) and the original owners and three or so generations, mainly had the first name of Richard.
