Irish Catholic Registers - Marriage Licence lists

Post by luxor »

I've noticed lists under 'Licences'. I'm a bit confused :? What is the significance of these? Are they just a list of marriage licences obtained from the church for a subsequent marriage, or do they record the marriage itself? They seem to be from a wider area than just a parish... and they seem to be from the transition period between there being no records and the system finally running smoothly.

I'm not sure about this at all. I'm wondering if (as in England & Wales pre 1837) non established church marriages at this time (early 1840s) in Ireland did not have the legal status of established church marriages. Perhaps these marriages took place in the Church of Ireland parish church for legal reasons and the RC church for religious reasons and the priest was relaxed enough to record the RC event and the non RC event? Or maybe it's just the RC version of the established church marriage process.

Marriages by Licence as opposed to marriages by Banns? There is a cost on the far right hand column.

Could this be like the BT's we are used to seeing in the Church of England. Did Ireland use the same system?

Thanks. It does look like they used the same system and some parishes kept a ledger of payments. I hadn't seen that before.

'Some parishes will record the payment of parish dues among its parishioners. Sometimes included are receipts for a particular fund-raising effort, usually that of buildings within the parish.'
