Children of Timothy and Esther Manchester 1823 to 1845

Post by lynne99 »

This family lived in The Royal Oak Bickerstaffe in the 1840s census. They then moved to Liverpool.
I have 11 children for this couple.
Henry 1823
Ellen 1825
Thomas 1828
John 1830
Sarah or Jane or both. 1832
Josiah 1834
Elizabeth 1836
Jane 1839
Flora Hannah 1843
Sarah 1845
Mary 1845
All born Skelmersdale or Bickerstaffe.
The problem is that on 26 August 1832, there were 2 baptisms. Both on Lancs OPC.
The first in Lathom chapel Ormskirk for Jane Manchester.
Baptisms: 26 Aug 1832 Latham Chapel, Ormskirk, Lancashire, England
Jane Manchester - Daughter of Timothy Manchester & Esther
Abode: Skelmersdale
Occupation: Wheelwright
Baptised by: J Ireland

The second in St Paul's Skelmersdale for a Sarah Manchester
Baptism: 26 Aug 1832 St Paul, Skelmersdale, Lancashire, England
Sarah Manchester - [Child] of Timothy Manchester & Esther
    Abode: Skelmersdale
    Occupation: Wheelwright

What I need to find out is are these one child or two to the same parents. I have a death for Sarah in March 1842 aged 10. She is also on the 1841 census.
Any helpand insight would be gratefully received. Thanks

I would think it's too coincidental to be 2 different families. I don't know the answer why they are recorded at both churches, however they are not the only baptisms,

I seem to remember when looking at the Ormskirk Parish Register for this time baptisms at the chapels within the parish were recorded in the Ormskirk Parish Register as well as separately at the respective churches so you would get two recordings of the same baptism if that makes sense. I think they are the same event just recorded in the mother church and the local church at the the time.

Thanks all. So you think it was one child possibly called Sarah Jane. Otherwise they must have been rushing round on that day. They lived in Skelmersdale at that point.m Thanks again.

One point brought to our attention at the Conference yesterday was the ease with which a registrar/vicar could make a mistake in copying a name from one register to another.

Joyce and Harold Culling had a certificate hat quoted the incorrect middle name for a groom, it was obviously a copied register forwarded to the GRO as all the handwriting was the same. They went to the local office and checked, where they found that the middle name was correct - and obviously different from the first certificate. Unfortunately the GRO were unable to change their copy to the correct one as they had to keep what had been provided to them by the vicar.

So the difference in names in your registers could be as simple as that.
