Missing from 1871 census?

Post by daggers »

I cannot find a family called Thomas. In 1861 they were at Upper Hope Place in Liverpool: father Henry Thomas, shipowner's clerk, with wife Margaret (second name Elizabeth but not always used. ) Children: Henry, 11, Arthur 9, Amy E 6, Rebecca G 4. All were born in Liverpool.
In 1881 Margaret was a widow living at 25 Dryden Road with the four children, by now adults. She was described as 'property owner'.

Where could they be in '71? I have not found a death for Henry senior, nor a probate but there are several possibles in FreeBMD. I am not too bothered about his death, except for tidiness. Margaret died in 1888 but her probate was not granted until 1916.

Any clues would be welcomed.

Thanks once again, Bert.
I cannot read anything on the Anc version of the Rodney Street family, but will try again in daylight. From what you have given Arthur Morris may be with another family.
I found Rebecca at the school in WD but not Amy, so far. Again, eyes should be better tomrrow.

The 4 family members at Rodney St, 1871, how they have managed a transcription I don't know, they should be applauded.

There's newspaper snippets for a Henry Thomas, 19 Water Street,(Office?) Liverpool, connected to shipping. They appear to cease after December 1871, perhaps around the time of Henry's demise?

Well I have to say that, for all we complain about the transcriptions on Ancestry, they do have to be appreciated and as you say applauded, for some of them too, they could just as easily have put blank spaces for that.

Here is a copy with a white background but I don't think it's any more legible.

I am very grateful for all your efforts. I think I now have enough to keep me going for a while. I found the two Thomas girls at their school, once my eyes had cleared this morning!
