Help - welsh Liverpool 1909

Hello everybody.

I find I have a family link in Liverpool, but don't know how long we were there, and hope that sks might be able to help me.

My maternal grandfather was from west Wales and married my grandmother in the Welsh Presbyterian Chapel in David Street in March 1909.

First question - is that the same building that is now a Gospel Hall?

Grandmother Edith Jones was living at Lodge Lane in Toxteth Park, which appears to be, what? a mile away?

Her father is given as William Jones, deceased, ironmonger.

I believe, but am not sure, that they were a Welsh-speaking family.

Are there any documents such as trade directories which might give me more information?

At first I thought the church must have been the Park Road, Welsh Congregational Church, http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Li ... regational as this would meet David Street http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co. ... laz/W9.htm

But there is mention of it in he Record Office archives as Belvidere Road Independent Baptist Church : Founded 1878 as a Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Chapel.
Became Independent Baptist Church in 1950.

So I don't think it is the same as Gospel Hall.

Yes Lodge Lane would be just over a mile away.

There are Electoral Registers and Trade Directories at the Liverpool Record Office and some of us hold directories ourselves. Do you have any idea whether William Jones lived in Liverpool and when he died?

Thank you both for your replies.

The information I have is from a copy of the marriage certificate, which definitely has only David Street as the address.

I have to say that the letting properties do resemble a Welsh chapel pretty well; so this could well be the place.

As for great-grandfather Jones. I do not know for sure that he died in Liverpool, but I recall my mother saying maybe fifty years or more ago that the family had an ironmongery in Penny Lane. Would that be feasible?

Margaret is a widow in the 1911 census, same address

William's Carmarthenshire roots, which are totally new to me, perhaps lead to a reason for my west Wales widower grandfather to even know of an eligible young lady so far away.

So - I've started looking through Kelly's 1894 (page 63) and find that the "Calvinistic Methodist or Welsh Presbyterian" chapel in David Street, Toxteth Park is ministered by one William Jones. Probably coincidence, but.....

and on page 226, at 133 Lodge Lane, William Jones, tallow chandler.

You've probably seen from other censuses that William Jones' wife was a Margaret Sophia.

This looks a likely marriage:

I phoned up the estate agent yesterday and asked what this chapel was actually called, but the young girl after asking her colleagues came back to the phone (laughing ) and said they only knew it as David Street Chapel, maybe she thought I was a religious maniac.

RT. No - All this is new for me. And with names like Jones from Wales, it is going to be an interesting quest.
