Any postcard experts with us? - Mersey shipping scenes.

Post by daggers »

I am not a collector but have five, probably 1920s, copyright by Daily Post Printers. They are coloured views of shipping on the Mersey, from paintings rather than photos. 'Magic of the Mersey series':
'Home from the West' -Allan Liner passing New Brighton, with a fishing boat near central and the old Tower to the left.
'Trawlers returning' under sail.
'Through the haze' -fog on the Mersey, with a two-funneled Cunarder at anchor.
'Pride of the Port' - Mauretania - the old four-funnel version, with tugs.
'Out with the Tide' -entrance to Canning Dock, with square-riggers and a tug.

They seem to be by the same artist. Has anyone clues as who it was? Sorry but I cannot post the images.

I googled Magic of the Mersey series and quite a lot of postcards appeared on eBay. The name Sam JM Brown came up but I think he was probably the producer of the post cards. Will see if there is anymore detail elsewhere about them on eBay.
Give me something todo while I have my mid morning drink

The photo on this ebay ad for 'Trawlers Returning' is definitely signed 'Samuel? J M Brown':

I knew I could count on Forum members to give the answer. I am sure you are right about Sam J.M. Brown being the artist. I have a printed sketch book of b/w Liverpool scenes dated 1917, and the style is similar. [It has a label showing it was bought at Philip Son & Nephew - long gone, of course.]

Sorry for late reply, but I have been out most of the day.

That's a name from the past, I remember my mum mentioning that shop often.
