Irish newspaper obituaries

Post by JohnnyO »

Hi all, anyone got any links to either Kerry or Galway newspaper obituaries from years gone by? Ive had a look, but apart from the Irish Times, which is chargeable, I cant find many about. I'm hopefully visiting both counties in spring, so if all else fails I'll be delving around graveyards and newspaper archives

Thanks,

John

Do you have a Lancashire Library card? with this you can access the old newspapers, I know there is at least one for Ireland, but it may be a Dublin newspaper.

Hi Mary, no, just a Sefton one. No problem, I will have a look whilst I'm in both counties.

You can get a Lancashire library card from them , by phone or on line. They only take a couple of days to come through. If I get a chance I'll look for you tomorrow.

Join here, you will receive your membership number fairly quickly and you can check the Old Newspapers, 17th & 18th/19th Century. As it's free you might as well have it as not.

Hi, there is a Belfast News Letter, in 19 c newspapers. From what I can see there are hundreds of thousands of hits for Kerry or Galway and published in Ireland. (Using advanced search.)
I do hope this has been useful.

Just a quick update. My wife's aunt in Canada has just sent me a picture of a grave in Galway that I was looking for, which gives the dates of death of both her grandparents, which is why I wanted the obits from the paper. At exactly the same time, a forum member on an Irish genealogy site has contacted me on FB to tell me I had the wrong cemetery (new, not old) and he is going to the graveyard tomorrow to take more pictures and give me the location of the graveyard and the grave for when we go in May. He then tells me that his dad, who is 90, knew my wife's grandparents and children, including her dad, and during WW2 was part of a local community force with one of her uncles. Needless to say, I'm meeting them both in May, and buying them as many pints of Guinness as they want, as the father has loads of information on my wife's family.
Isn't the power of the internet a wonderful thing sometimes. I'm still looking online for the obits though :D

Great stuff, I do recommend social media for searching for living people.

Plenty of the black stuff will lubricate their throats - always good for remembering stories
