To my mind a birth certificate is needed so that you can check the mother's maiden name.

Maria is not as popular as Mary so searching for a birth I have come across just one in a three year span, in Lancashire.

Births Jun 1843
Pritchard Maria Liverpool 20 382

Why don't you order this from the GRO but using just the year and saying "No" to the question about the GRO reference being known. Then give the criteria that the parents names must be John and Maria. Fair enough if they refund your money, if not I believe this would be the right one.

Thank you Mary, good idea, I didn't even know you could order a cert without the GRO reference number!! So thank you for that tip too. :)

I tried ordering 2 certs last year without the reference numbers. Oops I'd forgotten you could do that!

The 1851 Census has a Martha Pritchard as neice to my William Atherton, bricklayer at 11 Great Oxford Street (later renamed Silvester Street). Pritchards are neighbours in 1861 in Hornby Street. John Pritchard, solicitor's clerk! I think we are connected:-

My great, great grandmother Ann Atherton was born on 31 Oct 1855 in Court 15 in Woodstock Street to William Atherton, journeyman bricklayer and Mary Wright. The parents married on 5 Feb 1845 at St Peter's CE Liverpool. Groom was a brickmaker his father William a shoemaker. Bride's father William Wright was a flax dresser. Witness 1 looks like John Pritchard, witness 2 was Mary Jones.

My William Atherton was baptised at St Peter's CE Liverpool on 22 Jun 1817 his parents lived in Vernon Street and were William Atherton, cordwainer and Mary Worswick. Mary Worswick was born on 27 Mar 1788 and baptised at St Peter's CE Liverpool on 27 Apr 1788. The family lived in Crosshall Street and the parents were Percival Worswick, ropemaker and Martha.

Blue, I was in Liverpool yesterday and popped into the Record Office to get a copy of the above marriage of William (brickmaker) and Mary as I like to have my own record where possible :) that is most probably my John Pritchard the book keeper as a witness I should think, doesn't he have nice clear handwriting? :D I've done a bit of a tree of the Atherton's as it looks like William's brother, Joseph (plasterer) and family was living with John Pritchard and family in 1851 in St Mary's Place as a lodger (HO107 piece 2176 F422 page 46).

Mary, I ordered the birth certificate of Maria last week and am anxiously awaiting it to see the maiden name of her mother so I can get the wheels moving again and find a marriage.

It's a REALLY bad copy and only bits are clear. Some man in there tried to help me get a clear copy but I had to print off about 6 or 7 pages and will to try to cobble something together. The lady at the desk where you pay didn't even charge me after looking at them!!

This man (semi professional genealogist) told me it was because the printers are so poor, he has one of these huge microfilm readers at home  and has no problems printing out clear copies. I will upload it if you like and you may be able to play around with it or maybe it would be best if you PM'd me your email address and I can scan all I took yesterday and see if you can do anything with them?? Just let me know what's best for you.

This sounds like Chris, he's very helpful and also quite knowledgeable about the machines. If he couldn't get it clear I doubt anybody else would manage to.

No worries Blue.

Yes Mary he was a very nice man to help me as he did, I was most impressed when he took out the toner cartridge in the printer and gave it a shake!! Takes me ages at work to even change a laser printer cartridge!! :o

Is Maria Wright the sister of the above Mary Wright married to William Atherton (copies above from Liverpool RO)?
