North American Birth

Post by erika »

Hi All

I have just come across some new information that might help me find my husband's gt grandmother's birth.
She was born in North America, but up until yesterday I wasn't sure where. Not really sure still, but at least this new info maybe a little helpful.

Her name is ELIZA MYRA JANE RUFFELL b. 1857/58
Her parents William and Emma sailed to America arriving in New York on 6 Aug 1857 aboard James K from London.

They were back in England by 1859 when they had MIRA JANE baptised in Maldon Essex at St Mary's Maldon on 30 May.

The new info I have, has William with a brother James.
James has set up home in America and living at Ontario a town in Wayne County, New York, which is situated on the shores of Lake Ontario.
Other members of the Ruffell family also travel there.

My guess is that William and Emma went there and Eliza Myra Jane ( Mira Jane ) was born.
They then returned at some point to England, before 1859

So my big ask is, as I don't have a world wide sub to A******, could some kind person please see if there is a birth for Myra around 1857/8. Ruffell could be spelt numerous ways, Ruffle, Ruffill.
I would be so grateful

Thanking you in anticipation :) :)

Hi Bert

Thanks for trying. I think there maybe a problem trying to find anything in American records, I've never had much luck when I've tried

Still with this hobby nothing is ever that easy, it makes it more fun :D

Thanks again

I think the double FF/double SS might be worth keeping in mind too, we know how often that mis-spelling has caused problems.

Thank you Alex, that looks a very interesting website.
It is as I thought though, that birth records weren't kept for many years, including the years I was interested in. But you never know their names may show up in something, certainly worth a try :)
Many thanks again

Is it possible that Emma could have given birth on board ship on the way to America ....Long shot I know and you maybe have already thought of it.

Ann
Interesting thought which I hadn't considered. As all her census returns had given North America or America as place of birth, I just assumed :?
Have no idea how to search for a birth at sea and also have only seen the parents on a passenger list, not anything for immigration.
I've not found many of my ancestors abroad, so it's a bit of a mystery, boring lot!!

Probably not right but it's a possible misspelling - Rivell in 1860 is the nearest births at sea I have found ... oops just noticed it was male so definitely not

Yes Ann, that's William's brother. Nearly all the family moved out there, his parents and brothers. His mother returned to England where she died, but the rest stayed in Ontario.
I think Myra's birth will remain a mystery, but at least I know why they went to America in the fist place.
Thanks for looking :)
