2 Marriages

I have the following marriage:

Edward Fairclough married Mary Mousdell 6.4.1834 St Marys Lowe House RC St.Helens. (Taken from the CD) not as yet seen the original transcription.

Also found on Anc who I think is the same couple married at chapel Of Farnworth 11.5.1834, Edwards occupation as shoemaker on this marriage ties in with the Census I have for the couple.

Can anyone give a reasonable explanation as to why they would marry twice ??

It looks to me like one is the legal marriage with registrar and the other is an RC church marriage ceremony without a registrar. This was before RC churches were able to have registrar attended marriages.

Will have to try and get to have a look at the marriage at Lowe House in the near future, your explanation confirms what I expected to be the case, this is the first one I have come across in my FT.
