St Marys, Walton on the Hill

Post by BarbaraW »

I've just found some baptisms in the above church this weekend which gives the maternal grandfathers name which has proven extremely useful :D I've never seen this on any other church records before, does anybody know why this was done? It doesn't seem to carry right through the years though, so maybe the vicar in the particular years was a genealogist?

Dade parish registers | Learn | FamilySearch.org

I imagine you were looking at entries written in the system developed by one Rev Dade in Yorkshire. There are many Yorkshire registers written in this way and some in other counties. The system was discontinued as explained on a number of sites if you google Dade Registers.

I have a lovely one in the Blackrod registers when the vicar has obviously never come across Ambrose or maybe the Halsall accent made it difficult and Ambrose is Ambers.

It's proven such useful information it's a shame it never took off in every parish for every year, just think how many brickwalls it could have smashed down. :D

It allowed me to take things back a further generation knowing that the data I was entering was accurate and especially as I came across a few unusual names for my tree instead of my usual common ones  though the data wasn't as much as some of yours I'm very pleased with my findings and would like to thank the Reverend Dade for his foresight. :)

I've just come across a list of the parish registers that have this information but St Mary's doesn't appear so maybe it only went on there for a few years and as Hilary said it's mainly Yorkshire.

Hi Barbara, did you have to make an appointment to view the records, or were they through online research or Liverpool Library? A lot of my father's side of the family had links to St.Mary's for baptisms, marriages and burials, and I would find it useful.

What year did you have success with?

Thanks

I found these online with Ancestry yesterday Johnny but there are no images just an index. They are taken from Family Search Vital Records, but FS doesn't give those extra pieces of info we like. There have been quite a lot transcribed by Lan OPC too.

Mine yesterday gave the maternal father's name and a few had his abode too, they weren't on every baptism as I moved downwards in years, this was the late 1700's/early 1800's, I don't know if the actual registers have any more than this because according to the links given for the Dade Registers some vicars filled in far more!!

I've just been playing around with a surname in Lan OPC and its given me a wealth of information like this though I haven't matched any of these people up yet to mine: :D

Burial: 30 Jan 1796 St Mary, Walton on the Hill, Lancashire, England
Mary Ellison - Widow of Samuel Ellison & child of Richard Brownbill
Died: 27 Jan 1796
Age: 63
Abode: Liverpool
Cause of Death: Weakness
Where Buried: Chyard
Register: Burials 1790 - 1812, Page 28, Entry 5
Source: LDS Film 1647560

So even though this is a 63 year old woman who died she is still named as a child of her father, how useful is that!! But as I scroll down the page I can see that the information is much less in later years.

Has anybody here seen the actual parish registers or microfilm to see how much more information is given that hasn't been transcribed?

Thanks for the reply Barbara. I've been looking at some of the Lan OPC records too. I have already seen a lot of the records for my Sefton relatives by looking through the transcription records at Crosby library.

I'll have a look at the records on Ancestry when I get a few minutes free :) .

Thanks,

John

I'm looking for a baptism at the above church found on the IGI for the year 1786.

Ancestry baptism records start in 1806 for this church as far as I can tell.

There are CD's to buy from the Lancashire parish register society but they don't cover the year I am looking for.

Where else would they be available without having to visit Liverpool please?

Ancestry has Bishop's Transcripts for Walton on the Hill among their Lancs parish records you could try there. I haven't looked at them individually but I can see lots of early dates including 1780-1789.

Here's a link to these early Lancs records on Ancestry, to search manually choose register type and search for the church you are looking for:-

Barbara W -- I have the records for Brownbills/Bramhills in Huyton from around 1580 if that helps you. I'm fairly sure the families are one and the same, and other variants include Brambell of Steptoe fame.

You know not many of us on here have laid claim to somebody famous/ a TV personality, how interesting that would be.
